I'm not a vet but an animal nutritionist. This is my point of view:
If you are sure that your dog is already free from mites or lice infestations and yet it still have the "scally skin" problem then there is a possibility that your dog had some trace mineral imbalance. In particular I am guessing he is deficient in Zinc. If you can get Zinc oxide puede mo ito ibigay sa dog mo.
Is he in dog food? What brand?
If he is not in dog food....(as in home cook meals)....there is a good chance that your dog have a very high exposure to a rich calcium diet (like sardinas na ulam or tuyo or something rich in calcium).
Excess of calcium in animals (greater than 0.9% of its daily diet) can trigger zinc deficiency dahil magkakontra ang calcium and zinc absorption in the body.
Now how much zinc does your dog needs, you might ask? Well it depends on the severity...in some cases, as much as 3000 ppm zinc (activity as zinc) may be needed.... on normal cases only as low as 165 ppm. Ang laki ng variance ano?
If you want more detail on this, ideally I need to see the animal (can you take digital pictures of it?) or perhaps describe ilang % ng body ang covered ng scally deposits, is the skin exposed, how long na itong problem, what is his diet composed of, how old is the dog, do you have other pets at home with this dog, are they exhibiting the same symptoms.... to name a few of my questions.
I am afraid most vets don't know this kasi they don't practice much on nutritional deficiencies unlike my profession does.
glenn,
i have 2 other dogs na malapit sa kaniya...a great dane and a german shep...hindi naman po sila nahawa ever....mag iisang taon ko na pong problema itong bulldog ko who is 3 yrs old na...
kinakain niyo po ay lamb and rice...hmm..i forgot the brand...the once na nabibili sa price smart (s&r)...
zinc?hmm...ang pinapainom ko lang po sa kaniya is cod liver oil and enervon c...masarap kasi..ehrherherher
sabon niya is dr kauffman sulphur soap....
ill send you some pics sa email po...salamat po sa inyo.....
The fact that me katabi ito na aso na hindi naman affected says that hindi infectious type ang tumama.
What makes me wonder is the fact that his diets and the other dogs are the same and yet walang problem yung iba. This suggest that there is a chance that this particular dog had gotten it from a different origin (not necessarily diet). Nakakulong ba lagi ang bulldog mo?
Cod liver oil is natural vit E....ok di eto sa skin ang coat ng dogs....funny is that how come hindi na alis ang problem considering its been a year na pala. Enervon C is simply vit C...anti stress.
While I wait for your uploaded pictures...have you tried giving this dog "IN DIET" its some sort of a pelleted pill of mix vitamins and minerals for dogs. Effect nito is to improve dog coat. I've tried this (as recommended by a dog breeder friend of mine) and works quite okay in improving the glossyness of the coat at medyo mas full-body rin yung hair ng dogs. They normally give it pag may problem lang until the dog recovers and then they stop na...minsan a month prior to a dog show nila ibinibigay para pagdating ng dog show okay na okay na ung coat.
Some health stores will have the zinc tablets/capsule that you can try using....meanwhile DONT buy yet....until I see the pictures or the dog itself...baka hindi yung ang problem.
Should you see this message today 27 Aug....try texting me at 09178329915 at around 3pm nasa Quezon City (Timog area) ako and since I am going to Marikina puede kitang daanan and see the dog itself if ok sa sked mo.
