(2nd UPDATE) Qantas plane loses cabin pressure, makes emergency stop in Manila

A Qantas Boeing 747 passenger plane made an emergency landing at the Manila international airport on Friday after a "hole in its belly" caused it to lose cabin pressure, an airport official said.

Airport operations officer Ding Lima told local radio that the aircraft lost cabin pressure shortly after leaving Hong Kong bound for Melbourne.

"The captain of the aircraft immediately called the control tower for an immediate landing," said Lima.

"There is a big hole in the belly of the aircraft near the right wing about three meters in diameter," he said.

He said the aircraft was carrying 350 passengers and 16 crew.

The pilots "requested an emergency landing and it was granted," airport manager Alfonso Cusi said, adding he did not know what the exact problem was.

Passengers reportedly said the plane, which was flying via Hong Kong with about 300 passengers and crew, plunged 20,000 feet (6,010 meters) after a door apparently "popped" midflight.

Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper reported on its Web site that passengers reported experiencing a "fairly explosive" depressurization in the cabin which led to oxygen masks dropping from the ceiling.

One passenger reported that the pilot did "an amazing job" of controlling the aircraft.

A Qantas spokeswoman refused to confirm or deny an emergency landing had taken place but said the aircraft had been diverted to Manila and was now undergoing inspection on the ground.

"The aircraft is on the ground and is undergoing an inspection," she told AFP. "We are still gathering all the data," she said in Sydney.

However a Qantas assistant supervisor in Manila said the plane had made an emergency landing, although the incident had not been "life threatening" and the aircraft had landed safely.

"The aircraft made an emergency landing just after 11:00 am (local time)" Qantas assistant supervisor at Manila's international airport Lorena Dimaya told AFP.

She said the aircraft had taken off from Hong Kong when it "encountered some technical problems and requested to be diverted to Manila where it made an emergency landing."

"All (passengers and crew) have been taken off the aircraft and have been taken to hotels in Manila," she said.

She said the aircraft was carrying "about 300 passengers and crew". With Agence France Presse

Nakakatakot yun ganyan, yun may air pocket nga lang, pag drop ng hundred feet nakakatakot na e, 20,000ft pa kaya

nag "drop" ba talaga? baka naman ibinaba ng mabilisan ng pilot to a more manageable altitude yung plane kasi nga they are experiencing cabin decompression.

Plunge ba talaga o controlled dive?

PLUNGE is overkill by media....during an emergency decompression...pilot go to 10,000 feet ASAP.

Jeez that hole looks pretty bad. Buti it did result in a "catastrophic damage...

When the plane finally berthed at parking bay number 4, airport authorities found a large gash on the right-hand side of the plane, measuring about 15 square meters.

They found out that the plane’s outer aluminum shell had been blown off near the intersection of the wing and the airplane’s body, near the belly where the luggage are stored.

A large piece of what appears to be canvas and a red piece of insulation material stuck out of the fuselage, as though an explosion from the inside pushed out them out.

But authorities did not see any sign of burning to show that the blown off area was caused by explosives.

An aircraft mechanic on the tarmac, viewing the plane, said that luckily, there were no control wires or hydraulic or pneumatic tubing on the right-hand side of the plane, because all of them were located on the left-hand side.

Otherwise, the flight controls could have been affected and the pilot might have a hard time maneuvering the plane.

The plane was eventually towed back to the Lufthansa Teknik hangar where it would undergo forensic examination to determine the actual cause of the blast.

imo, looking at the large hole... hindi kapanipaniwala ang sinasabing not life threatening

thank god walang casualties and hindi natamaan ng debris ang engine....but this incident nothing compare to PAL flight PR 434 Cebu to Narita Dec. 11, 1994. sumabog an bomb under the passenger seat and ripped off the window and fuselage. Plane landed safely at Okinawa airforce base. Fatality...1.

OT: That pilot was a good friend of mine. On his trans-Pacific flights, he often tuned the aircraft's backup radio to the Ham Radio band to enjoy a good chat with friends (mostly pinoys) around the world.

He made one last glorious flight on 14 Feb. 2007 ... rest in peace, Capt. Ed Reyes - DU1ERV.

BTTT - I saw this in the news today. Aba, malaki nga yung butas. For someone who doesn't have an idea on the 747's structure, it looks scary indeed. The closest I got was building R/C planes, but I still wouldn't want to be onboard the plane when that happened.

Plane plunge 20,000 ft, makes emergency landing at Manila!
