Filipino activist held in Hong Kong

A FILIPINO militant leader en route to join protests against the World Trade Organization conference was held for about four hours by authorities by immigration authorities at the airport in Hong Kong on Saturday.

Danilo Ramos, secretary general of the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas, was questioned about the purpose of his visit, according to KMP public information officer Carl Ala.

He said Ramos was with six other KMP members but was the only one held at the airport.

Reports reaching the KMP and its allied organization Pamalakaya in Manila said Ramos and his party arrived in Hong Kong around 10 a.m.

Ramos was released around 1 p.m.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but a Filipino activist going abroad to do a protest in a foreign soil is a big no no for me. They don't have any business at all doing that in HK. They should have been arrested and jailed dahil wala silang karapatan para mag rally doon.

Kung gawain nila ay ganun sa Pilipinas.. mag stay na lang sila sa pinas at doon na lang mag rally and not in another country.

Same thing with the foreign activists, di rin nila dapat gawin yon sa Pinas (ie. ang sumama sa rally at mga protesta sa kalsada sa bansa natin).

    It's just my opinion.

for their (activist and their group) part naman... i think it doesn't matter kung they get to actually be there in the street protest vs WTO or they get questioned or detained abroad.... ang mahalaga sa kanila ay may media exposure...

    just my 2 cents. peace.

very good points, and i agree with all of them.

what's sad, however, is how the spirit of peaceful dissent and changing the world ala Gandhi and People Power I seems to have completely disappeared. today, it seems like people take to the streets purely to riot (ala WTO, France in 2005, etc.). also, if you talk to some of these people, they have no use for your opinion if you don't agree with them. they demand that their voice be heard, but they don't seem to think yours should if it conflicts with theirs. hypocrites.

that's silly. blame the WTO to justify a reason why some nations are poor or becoming more and more poor. although I agree that this free-trade or globalization concept is a brainchild of a few greedy rich & powerful men, (imagine walang tanawan ng utang na loob or accountability yun mga intl. corporations while they exploit the natural resources of every nation, poor and rich alike hehehe ...), we really cant do anything about it. it's a new world order that we all must learn to adjust our lives with.

after all, nations are just man-made illusions for each of us to have a sense of identity. but in the end, we all live in one planet. Share. No one has exclusivity over a certain area just bec. they lived their for more than 1000 years.

immigration yan ng ibang bansa... talagang ganyan.

even dito sa atin... bawal sumali ang mga foreigners in any kind of rally.

very true...it is a form of evolution...and in evolution some might perish (economies may perish, countries might go to war or starve)....

so it would be better off to be aware and take resposibility to do what needs to be done....these people thinks that they are aware enough and that they think that what they are doing (going into the streets to protest) is a way to educate others...it is really for us to decide to join their cause or not.
