    Attempt to kidnap tourism exec foiled

    The presence of reporters foiled an attempt to kidnap Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) General Manager Robert Dean Barbers and his family in Batangas on Saturday morning, police reported.

    The attempted abduction took place at around 11:30 a.m. near Barangay Manglinaw in Bauan town, police said. The Barbers were on their way to a beach resort in a Ford Explorer van and was cruising along the national road when a Toyota Revo van with several armed men onboard cut into the Explorer’s path.

    Barbers reportedly got down from the van and introduced himself as a government official, but the suspects with drawn guns tried to seize him.

    Barbers tried to resist and the scuffle caught the attention of some local media practitioners who were nearby, police said.

    The armed men let go of Barbers and fled when the reporters approached.

    Responding policemen later arrested one of the suspects, identified as Police Officer 1 Jun Bertucio who readily named his cohorts.

    napanood ko video nito na nakuhaan ng cellphone ng isang reporter. mga military at pulis ang involved pero naka-civilian clothes nung nangyari. grabe talaga. mukhang kidnapping talaga ang balak nila kasi kung away trapiko eh bakit sila natakot sa reporter at bakit lahat sila may baril. tapos wala sila sinasabi about any traffic incident (sa batangas ito kaya wala masyado traffic) basta pinabababa nila si Barbers. Sabi nila baka day kidnapping daw. dudukuting ka tapos maliit na amount lang ang ransom na hihingin (100 to 200K) then release ka the same day. mukhang may mga kandidato na walng pera sa kampanya ah.

    there needs to be higher penalties for police and military personnel found guilty of a crime. :hang:
