MANILA, Philippines -- Monday, April 30, will be a regular working day while Labor Day, May 1, will be a non-working holiday, the Office of the Executive Secretary said Tuesday.
Malacaņang has adopted the recommendation of Labor Secretary Arturo Brion to keep Labor Day on Tuesday because moving it to April 30 will be disadvantageous to both business and the workers, especially to daily wage earners.
To give workers a long weekend, Malacaņang usually declares as non-working holiday the day that is in between the weekend and the official holiday.
But Brion said this would disrupt the schedules of businesses and would affect daily wage earners.
May 1 is not among the possible holidays cited in Proclamation 1211 released by Malacaņang in January, which includes declaring April 7, a Saturday a special non-working holiday, having been sandwiched between Good Friday and Easter Sunday; June 11, a Monday, might be declared a non-working holiday while June 12, Tuesday, Independence Day, might be declared a working day; November 2, Friday, might also be declared a special non-working day following for the observance of All Saints Day on November 1; December 24, Monday, to be declared a special non-working day, being sandwiched by the weekend and Christmas Day, a regular holiday.
