Marubeni-DMCI group bags $1B contract to build MRT-7

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - A joint venture between Japan's Marubeni Corp. and DM Consunji Inc. (DMCI) bagged the construction contract for the $1 billion MRT-7 railway project of Universal LRT Corp.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange, DMCI Holdings said the Marubeni-DMCI consortium signed an engineering, procurement, construction contract for the Metro Rail Transit System (MRTS) and Intermodal Transportation Terminal of the MRT-7 Project with Universal LRT.

DMCI spokesman Elery Mendoza told Agence France-Presse the project would cost around $1 billion and start early next year.

"It will most probably take 42 months for the entire system to be completed," he added.

In Tokyo, Dow Jones Newswires quoted a Marubeni statement as saying it and DMCI received an order worth $1 billion to build railway tracks and stations in Manila.

The MRT-7 project involves the construction of a 22-kilometer train line with 14 stations from San Jose del Monte in Bulacan to the corner of North Avenue and Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA) in Quezon City. The project also includes a 22-kilometer, 6-lane highway to Bulacan.

The MRT-7 will be connected to the MRT-3 train line and the Light Rail Transit (LRT) line 1 through a common station in North Avenue.

Universal LRT is a railway firm controlled by diversifying conglomerate San Miguel Corp. In November 2010, SMC acquired a 51% equity interest in Universal LRT, which holds the concession for the MRT-7. It will have 25 years to operate the train line.

Manila's light rail systems currently serve about 1.3 million commuters daily

sana i-improve nila ang planning. yung pag-transfer from one line to another ay sobrang layo. hindi katulad sa ibang bansa na separated lang by floor levels..

Here's some description on it. SkyscraperCity - View Single Post - Metro Manila LRT and MRT Lines Thread 26

Looking at those sketches, WTH is there still going to be "at grade" levels? It's an EDSA MRT fail we should have learned from before. I hope they also decide to make the QC circle stretch underground.

The tracks will be on the same level as the road at some portions it seems. If you look at EDSA MRT, we lost one entire lane through most of EDSA because of this design.

Ahh.. got it. I think this has to do with the need for the train tracks to be as level as possible. I would imagine that electric trains does not like steep gradients by physical limitation and/or design. Most of our roads, including the whole length of EDSA have slopes and grades that trains simply can't follow. So they designed the whole track to sort of follow a relatively level grade throughout. So you'll see some parts of the track elevated, while seemingly underground on some segments.

*EDSA, AFAIK it was purely cost reasons why it was designed "at grade". Word is that it goes underground in Makati (Buendia - Ayala) because Forbes and Dasma reprezent objected to the elevated stations and noise it would bring to their turf.

Commonwealth Avenue is pretty flat really; EDSA has more drastic elevation changes it seems.

    Wishful thinking:

Just look at the green they incorporated to the design.

Mas masaya siguro kung parang trams in Europe and SF ang at-grade nila sa QC circle hehe. Patintero tren, bus, jeep, motor, bike, at jaywalker wooohooo!!!

But isn't Commonwealth wide enough to lose at least one lane without affecting the traffic much?

Yes, Commonwealth is pretty wide but why narrow it? We should be thinking ahead that with an MRT on that route, it will be another major gateway to the vast tracts of land in Bulacan which will be eventually another "bedroom"of Mega Manila just like Cavite and Laguna.

Imagine how crazy QC circle would be with that scenario. :D
