DFA: Bringing fake items into US
    could mean visa cancellation
    By Veronica Uy
    INQ7.net

THE DEPARTMENT of Foreign Affairs on Friday reiterated the warning issued by the Philippine embassy in Washington DC to all Filipino travelers to the United States against bringing into the country any pirated item.

Quoting the travel advisory from the US Commercial Service, the Philippine embassy said that anyone bringing into the US any pirated item or items "would face automatic deportation in violation of intellectual property rights, or arrest and criminal prosecution, in addition to civil fines and penalties."

The embassy further warned: "Please remember that even ONE pirated item could jeopardize your trip."

Based on the advisory, the embassy said that US Customs officials are not only after pirated video compact discs (VCDs) or digital video discs (DVDs), fake brand bags and cosmetics and pirated books are on the US customs officers' hot list.

The embassy thus repeats the warning from the US Commercial Service to all nursing graduates who plan to take the NCLEX and CGF exams in the US not to bring in pirated books because they would be automatically deported for violation of intellectual property rights.

This warning goes especially to anyone going from the Philippines and coming back to the US with "pasalubong
    and padalas," the advisory added.

I wonder how they will scrutinize and judge an item whether it is counterfeit or not. Like cosmetics, for example. Or even shoes or bags. The threat as stated in this news item is so generalized you can suspect that the first intention of this memo is to scare people from buying counterfeit products.

How to check for counterfeit during customs inspection is really very interesting.

I think this memo is more applicable for those who carry items by the BULK, as was mentioned about the guy who brought in more than 4 dozens of DVDs.

But if you are wearing a fake Nike shoes when you enter Los Angeles airport customs, are they going to bring in an expert from Nike to examine your shoes? Will they ask you for the sales receipt of your shoes? Is there a Max Factor beauty care products technician who will be working at the airport all day just to check whether the make-up kit of passengers entering the U.S. are genuine? Whatdaf?

i would expect US customs and airport security to take the easy road as usual. they probably wouldn't check too much to see if your LV bag is fake, but they will definitely take a look at your CD carrying case to see if you have pirated CD's or DVD's (probably will try to tell by the labels). also, VCD's are a red flag because they are hardly sold legitimately in the US.

mukhang impossible bantayan kung hindi naman by bulk yung ipapasok mo. when i was there, my aunt was able to bring in half a dozen LV bags from greenhills without any problem. tapos yung request na koreanovela (2 series from divisoria) ng sis-in-law ko, pinadala ko sa cousin ko, di naman pinansin.

pag US citizen kaya ganun din sila? my former counterparts always go to greenhills for small LV bags and even some other knock-off items ... kasi minsan an LV or Gucci bag if worn with the real thing, passes off just fine.

i wonder if same policy applies ...
