in the old transmissions, the throttle cable and the governor of the hydraulic shifted automatic trans
in the new transmissions, the throttle sensor, vehicle speed sensor, coolant temperature and the mass airflow sensor or manifold absolute pressure sensor all input to the powertrain control module to command the shift solenoids.

Part of the trans to enable or disable cranking is still the park/neutral switch. Parts that prevent engine cranking include the alarm and anti-theft system
