Pardon my ignorance. I am Just curious how is this done?
Basing from the picture of Mazda3 interior, there's a "M" on the shift stick and I assume this is for the Manual Override. Where and How is then the manual shifting done? About other cars, is it the same as mazda 3?

    Your inputs will be appreciated.

    punta ka dito >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiptronic

local vehicles na meron nyan are the mitsu invecs II/invecs III where you have the manual gate with +/- for shifting up or down, and honda cvt which has the +/- buttons on the steering wheel. also the audi cars have tiptronic trannys.

essentially, it's just like a normal manual minus the clutch.

sorry its not a normal manual. those trannys are still based on Torque Converters that spin like crazy inside (aka SlushBox). the only true clutchless manuals out there are fm. the Toyota MR-S, BMW's SMG, VW's DSG and Ferrari's auto...

yup ... and it automatically downshifts to 1 pag nag full stop ka.

test-driven an A/T focus with M override, ok naman yng manual mode, except parang may delay (1 to 2 secs) sa up/down-shifting. maybe its just my foot...

Its not your foot, there is a lag between pulling/pushing the shift level and the shift actually happening.

those found in the puh-joe 307, mazda3 & focus delays for a second before shifting.

the one in the mazda6, hyundai coupe & tucson shifts much faster (but not as fast as Honda's CVT).

i've also driven an SMG equipped BMW and the response time is superb!

that's because there are no Gears to shift in the CVT, he he.
BTW on another note, i read fm. somewhere that the next Evo-X will get clutchless Semi-Automatic Tranny. hhhhhm, i think it will be one awfully sweet ride.

Our 06 Hyundai Sonata with Shiftronic also pauses slightly but on full automatic mode. It feels almost like a turbo (lag followed by a big burst of power) but with minimal lag. That's why for quick starts, I'd switch to manual mode because acceleration does feel significantly quicker than full auto.

A/T's with Manual override
