    Help,

bought a second hand ford focus 1.8

Yung Tiptronic hindi gumagana. wala naman problem sa P, R, N and D.

hindi lang talaga nag-e-engage yung tiptronic.

also, when i put it in reverse, hindi umiilaw yung reverse lights.

can anyone point me to someone really good in fixing this?

The tiptronic functions like a manual shifter. So while the car is running, the lever is shifted to the tiptronic function.
The gear is not supposed to change if you just place the transmission lever to tiptronic. To change gear, trip the lever
once and let it return to the rest position. There is some delay for the transmission in changing gears.
Remember, the gears will not change unless you trip the lever, either + or -.

Maybe ur engine speed is still below the set upshift rpm for "+".. Subukan mo ang "-" pag mabilis ang takbo ng car, the tranny should shift down and you will feel the engine brake at work. Kung di ito mangyari then my problema yang tranny..Most probably electrical problem..

So when you engaged the Tiptronic, without placing it to either + or - , does the transmission stays on the same gear upto redline?
or it shifts automatically as if it is in drive?

when you engage it, the display panel should say M, not D. it doesn't. in short tiptronic doesn't engage totally. the A/T is still in control all the time

yup, same i talked to to transmission specialists already, they said it's an electrical thing. they don't want to touch it though, they said they're good with mechanicals more than electrical

i've reset my ECU ffor another issue before, wala nangyari for the A/T. for the inidcator light, as was posted pa before, it doesn't work.

i tried checking when it becomes at fault, after four transmission malfunctions, this is what i observed:

    1. the dashboard indicator light suddenly shows "1" even if i'm engaged in "D". when this happens, i'm stuck with 1 and tranny doesn't shift. when i try to put it to the "+", it still won't shift.

    2. i'd stop by the road, and i'll put the transmission to "N". the message "transmission malfunction" shows

    3. however, when i put it into D, normal driving na ulit, except that there's still the transmission malfunction message on it.

can anybody refer me to a good transmission electrician please? natatakot na ako dalahin yung focus ko outside manila. casa is not an option, it's just too expensive

Boss, sorry to burst your bubble, but in my honest opinion you must bring your car to an authorized Ford repair facility. They and only they have the correct diagnostic equipment and software for your vehicle. Looking for an independent mechanic for a concern such as yours is like playing russian roulette. If it were me and I were to choose between the surefire casa and the independent "under the bamboo tree" mechanic, I'll go to the casa, grin and bear it.

    My 2 cents.

Plus 1. But then, you can have it diagnose muna sa casa and then try to scout a very good AT specialist. Im betting it's within the electricals of your tranny.

I agree with what the lowslowbenz.

I quoted your post to illustrate - will going to the neighborhood talyer give you confidence and peace of mind on taking your car out sa highway? Certainly not for me since it's the transmission involved.

Not good still, straight casa is the way to go for these types of concerns. When I was with Jaguar, we had a very stingy customer who would have his Jag diagnosed by us, then bring it to his suki along Banawe.

Wrong move, this "boy-kuryente" tried to fiddle with the myriad of wires, "without" a proper schematic diagram. End result was a none starting Jag, toasted wires, and a fried ECU. 250K down the drain. ;)

Stingy and Jaguar really don't mix. That's why I'm sticking with my cheap car LMFAO!

the reason i don't want to bring it to the casa is because they want to change the whole damn tranny. eh gumagana nga eh, yung tiptronic lang hindi, bakit ako gagastos ng 200K?

    Here's your explanation:

Modern automotive gearboxes, such as the one you have in your car are electro-mechanical in nature. This means that various electronic components are responsible for actuating the mechanical bits of the tranny (drive-by-wire technology). IIRC, the tranny of your Focus is being manufactured by ZF (Germany). ZF is a world leader in gearbox design and manufacturing, they are also OEM to Mercedes Benz, Audi, Porsche, etc.

Chances are, that your tranny's tiptronic function is incorporated to the main transmission valve body, hence there is no way of "repairing" that concern, but to replace the whole thing. Things that you can do as a Focus owner: 1. You can write a formal letter of complaint to Ford Philippines regarding your concern, and pray that they act on it. 2. Go online, and search for similar concerns such as yours, hoping that there's a field fix on it. 3. Ask around if there's a silent campaign, or technical service bulletin from Ford regarding your specific concern.

    Goodluck
