ok lang ba? like when you need extra push when overtaking a car? hinde ba masisira if you down shifted from D to D3? considering my A/T car have 5 speed...

I mean if your cruising on the fifth gear than down shifted to D3...'coz I was thinking hinde ko ginagawa sa manual na from 5th gear eh baba ng 3rd gear...

sa A/T car ba when you do that automatic na siya na dadaanan muna ng 4th gear? or diretso siya kaagad sa 3rd gear?

if you drop the gear from 5th to 3rd gear..it wouldnt go to 4th gear first.
my question is why do you need to manually drop the gear when overtaking?just floor the gas pedal and the trans will automatically drop down in gear.
will it drop 2 gears when you floor the gas?that will depend on the speed youre at and how the gears on the trans are programmed.
best way is to find out how its programmed on downshifts and upshifts * WOT and at what RPM.
    example...
here is how my gears are programmed(auto trans with 4 speed)
    *WOT
    1st to 2nd gear * 5500RPM-40MPH
    2nd to 3rd gear * 5500RPM-80mph
    3rd to 4th gear * 5000RPM-120mph

    downshift points
45MPH and under downshifts to 1st gear
85MPH and under downshifts to 2nd gear
125MPH and under downshifts to 3rd gear

Simple prob that needs simple solution bro. Just put the pedal to the metal and your tranny will downshift to give you power.

Floor the gas pedal and it should automatically downshift.

Read the vehicle manual, because typically, it should state the maximum speed tolerated when you downshift (change A/T position), else it could damage your engine/tranny....

GA: Everytime you floor the gas, you trigger a switch at the base of the pedal (well, older cars really has a switch, newer ones may have a sensor) and that'll downshift to a proper gear for increased acceleration, it can downshift two gears or one, depending on your current speed.

Manually downshifting an automatic transmission is perfectly fine if and only if you do not over rev the engine. Just know each gear's maximum speeds first before downshifting the transmission manually, so as to avoid any trouble.

As with Theveed said, it's often called the kickdown switch - because it kicks down a gear and once you step on it to activate the switch you're also pressing the accelerator hard, thereby giving full acceleration with a lower gear. That's the principle.

Simply stepping on the pedal sometimes does not activate the kickdown switch, so if you don't want full throttle acceleration (near WOT, but not fully) on a lower gear then downshifting is fine as long as the gears are capable of running at those speeds.

What does WOT mean and how does one find the shifting points?

Sometimes you really need to downshift an AT to get a lower gear quicker than simply flooring the accelerator. I often do it when I need to overtake a slow moving suv or van.

    WOT = wide open throttle.

Your owner's manual usually states what the maximum speed is for each gear.

WOT = wide open throttle ... basically means the engine is fully open and operating at its maximum.

shift points = hmmm, most basic would be the maximum speed you can achieve in each gear. Example 1st gear = 60kph max, 2nd gear = 100 kph max, 3rd gear = 130 kph max and so on. So the shift point would be just before the maximum speed in each gear. It's actually easier to look at the tachometer than at the speedometer.

So if I undestand what you guys mean...better floor the pedal than downshift the gear.

How about the 'Overdrive' buttons often found on A/T vehicles?

I just floor it whenever i need to downshift. I prefer both my hands on the wheel when overtaking.

if it uses the old kickdown cable system, you can adjust it to what levels you want it to downshift.

be warned though, not to loosen a kickdown cable too much for early upshift desires. it will burn your a/t on highloads or uphills.

Normally I just put my AT lever to D2 or L1 when going downhill. I do this for engine braking.

I always have the overdrive button ON.

I prefer it to upshift early.

The kickdown switch overrides your shift selection, it downshifts instantly even if you are in either economy or standard mode. I usually downshift from D to D3 for those spirited sprints. D2 for engine braking and steep climbs. Other than that I just leave it at D (overdrive) for my daily drive.

for me, downshifting would give you better acceleration response than simply flooring the accelerator.

Its similar to engaging the 5th gear in a M/T car. Gives you a higher gear for better fuel economy on highways.
