before down shifting i make sure to lift my foot from the gas pedal... pero kung minsan nawawala ang forward thrust especially during uphill overtaking.
for me, downshifting would give you better acceleration response than simply flooring the accelerator.

if nasa 4th gear ka Overdrive switch lang to go down to 3rd gear

Kung gate type A/T just move it to 3

Hindi ko habit ang mag floor ngh gas, feeling ko lumalakas konsumo at ang lakas ng Shift shock

The Overdrive switch does not have any effect on your shifting. It is just an extra gear in your transmission that have above 1.0 gear ratio, hence the term overdrive. If it is switched ON, your transmission will engage it at the set speed. If it is switched OFF, then your transmission will engage up to 3rd gear only (for 4-speed trannies) or 4th gear (for 5-speed trannies).

So that's the 4th gear with OD "ON".

I thought it was shifting early , when it was shifting extra.

flooring the gas pedal for the instant you need the transmission to downshift is the right procedure rather than putting the gear in D3, if you check your throttle you will see that there are 2 cables are connected, the first cable is for the gas pedal and the other cable is for the transmission throttle cable... the transmission throttle cable allows the transmission to estimate how much the driver is stepping on the gas pedal... when you suddenly floor the gas pedal, the transmission will interpret this that you are needing extra power and will automatically downshift the A/T to the next gear... this will work at any gear of the transmission

flooring the gas pedal just an instant you need the power, when you feel the A/T already downshifted, release the pedal slightly as you control the vehicles speed..

also you may use the OD switch as an alternative, assuming your gear is already on the OVER Drive 4th or 5th gear, switching the OD OFF will downshift the transmission to 3rd gear.. but the OD switch will only work if your gear is in the highest gear possible..

use only other gears like D3 S L when going uphill or towing heavy load but on flat surface, hiways, only use D,

There are some transmissions that are sensitive to prodding the go pedal, in which case just flooring it would make it downshift to gain better acceleration. However there are some systems wherein the go pedal is not as sensitive, or the driver does not want to go wide open throttle (WOT) and instead just wants enough acceleration but not to the point of maxing out the throttle so the combination of a less than sensitive transmission kickdown cable/system plus the desire to only go near WOT but not full throttle merits manually shifting to the lower gears.

For example, when I took the Jazz with its CVT, I can jab on the pedal and make it down shift but it's not enough, so I step on it more and it down shifts a second time, but it's still not enough so I just switch to the next lower gear (D to S) and gain much better acceleration than just stepping on the go pedal all the way to the floor. On the other hand, when I drive our 300TE, flooring the pedal makes it scream and I don't always want that. I just want better acceleration but not going all out, so I just shift to S from D (in both cases making sure the max speed of each gear is not surpassed) and move along.

This is because when you floor it, it maxes out the engine speed (nature of throttle cable) and it tells the transmission to shift down one gear lower (nature of the transmission cable). However, manually shifting to one gear lower allows one to bypass going full throttle yet grabbing a better set of gears for momentary acceleration, at which point when it is reached the shifter is returned to its normal gear (D). It's like in a manual transmission where you just shift to a lower gear but don't floor the go pedal, you gain better acceleration yet don't go overboard with full throttle.

Anyway, at least that is how I see it.
