MMDA considers closing EDSA sections on Sundays
    November 26, 2012 7:28am

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority general manager Corazon Jimenez said the MMDA is considering closing some sections of Epifanio delos Santos Avenue (EDSA) on Sundays to lessen pollution in the metropolis.

Jimenez added that the roads could be cleaned up as well during the times they are closed to traffic, radio dzBB's Glen Juego reported

Among some of the areas that are being studied for inclusion in this policy is a stretch of road between Ortigas and Boni Avenues.

However, Jimenez said one of their concerns would be disseminating information to motorists in order that they are not caught unawares.

Meanwhile, earlier on Sunday, the MMDA participated in a "car-free day" in Metro Manila to promote a clean environment. The event took place in Makati City.

Mayor Jejomar “Junjun” Binay Jr. said the goal of the event was to reduce air pollution in Metro Manila, particularly in main thoroughfares.

He added that the car-free day coincided with the nationwide observance of Clean Air Month this November. The car-free event was themed, “Car Free Day: A day of reflection for health, human life and environment. Stand up for your right to breathe clean air.” — DVM, GMA News

Who in their mind would think closing portions of EDSA on weekends would result in "cleaner air" in the metropolis?

There is a difference from a one-time event and doing it on a regular basis. Honestly, Makati has dramatically less car traffic during the weekend so doing a car-less day does not disrupt the flow of traffic in the metro. But doing it on EDSA would result in the same level of chaos that happened when a portion of C5 was virtually closed due to a major traffic incident a few weeks ago.

People will still go out and drive their cars on weekends. Closing portions of EDSA will just force them to take other roads where the same cars will be forced to slow down and brake more often. The result is the same cars having to burn more fuel and emit more exhaust. This plan is just an excuse that says the MMDA is powerless in improving the flow of traffic beyond what we have now.

What we need is more roads, not stupid half-baked plans.

    WTF...

And yet, another hare brained scheme in the making. Not attacking the cause of pollution and traffic in any way at all. Might as well ask SM to close down Megamall, MOA and North EDSA on Sundays as well.

i paid road user's tax so this cant be done!

close sections = heavy traffic = more pollution = bad idea!

implement a strict LTO registration na mahuhuli ang improperly maintained cars... that's how you control pollution...

another fail nanaman ito like the number coding scheme, na since 1995 pa, eh 2012 na, and did not solve any traffic problems!!!

    i second the notion!

we need a permanent solution! not another temporary ones like the number coding scheme...

widen the roads!!! eliminate non road worthy and illegitimate vehicles... that will solve the pollution!!!

Again, a sure sign that traffic planning is being done by non-drivers.

Just like the road-specific truck bans, which makes traffic twenty-times worse in the areas of the metro where the trucks re-route themselves through.

Want to lessen traffic on weekends? Impose a toll fee on EDSA. Of course... We've seen what increasing tolls can do to pollution. Thanks to the incredible toll rates on the SLEX, truck drivers and utility vehicles sometimes divert to the service roads, causing even more pollution and congestion than they would if they stayed on the main thoroughfare.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

All publicity and no real solution, just like when Tolentiono went around blessing EDSA. Traffic along EDSA is even worse now...

One time pollution nalang: Sunogin ang PUJs and buses.

Whenever i go to another country, napapailing nalang ako on how backward we are with all those dumb bus franchises, UV express, trikes, and a jeeps. We can't come up with a comprehensive transport solution. I myself would easily take public transpo... if it was easy. Because of all the hassles commuters encounter, people chose to spend more to maintain several cars and pay for gasoline instead.

Who is in the right mind to close some portions of EDSA to minimize pollution? Utak ewan naman ang nag-isip niyan. EDSA is a major road tapos papasara mo ibang sections nito?

another BOBO idea from these MMDA nincompoops.. just like the bus stop they created in the middle of the guadalupe bridge a few years ago and then demolished it after a week when they came to their senses that it was the stupidest idea they came up with at that time.

the only way to reduce air pollution is by removing the old smoke belcher buses, jeepneys, taxis and UV Express from the road. this will result to faster traffic for the newer private cars and thus spend lesser time on EDSA for a lesser pollution.

doesnt take a rocket scientist to come up with viable and doable solutions to the problems on EDSA. with these kind of people running MMDA, dont expect an improved situation along EDSA in the near future.

This is what happens when you put an attorney in an engineer's desk.

All Publicity kasi Politiko yang si Atty Tolentino.

It must be the same people who decided to close EMERALD AVE in Ortigas Center every Sunday and turn it into a bike park.

    Same logic.
