    1) Where and how do I apply for one?
    2) How long does it usually take?
    3) How much would it cost?

I'm aware that the use of one's local license (Philippine) is valid abroad for a certain period of time. However, this is not my reason for acquiring one so I need the answers to my question above. Thanks!

You are correct, pwede nga yang philippine license mo, pero for a limited time lang, ganun din ang international driver's license, for a limited period of time din lang.

Yup, I processed mine in this institution and I got in an hour or so. I don't think any International License is honored in the US[if that is where you will be driving in], as far as I know. The "international license" they provide is not equivalent to the license you would get if you were to apply for a license to drive in the US. The so-called license is just a "translation" in english and some other major international languages of what the provisions and limitations you have on your local driver's license (in your case, Pinas license). This means that you still have to have your Pinas license with you when you drive abroad... especially when you get pulled over by a cop. (I had been pulled over for missing a stop sign in the US, but that is another story). haha!

The local license would normally be okay to use without an international driver's license for a month (this is in Texas, it may be longer in some other states), after which you are required to get a local driver's license in the state\country you will be driving at.

In my opinion, it was a waste of money to get an international license since our Pinas license is written in English and so comprehensible naman siya sa halos lahat ng bansa... and that based on "Geneva Convention 1949 Sept." Philippines is one of the countries na allowed to drive internationally... and besides, si poging officer na nag-arrest sa akin did not even bother to ask me if I had an international license.

If getting an international license gives you peace of mind then I am all for it!
    Safe driving pre!

here's an additional info, have researched this from the California - Department of Motor Vehicle :

    International Driving Permits

The State of California does not recognize an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a valid driver license. California does recognize a valid driver license that is issued by a foreign jurisdiction (country, state, territory) of which the license holder is a resident.

The IDP is only a translation of information contained on a person's foreign driver license and is not required to operate a motor vehicle in California. Citations issued to a person in California who has an IDP, but does not have a California driver license will be placed on the Department of Motor Vehicle database.

The IDP is also called an International Driver License, International License, etc.

For more information about travel and driver licensing requirements outside of the US, visit the US State Department Road Safety Overseas website at: http://travel.state.gov/road_safety.html

On the contrary, in Virginia, police requires for an international driver's permit. I figured in a fender bender when i was there last year. i showed my PI license but the state trooper asked for my Int'l Driver's Permit, its good I acquired one before i went there. all I can say is, its better to have one even without using it, than having none at all, you will never know if you need it. Enjoy driving in the US of A.

You can also use your local driver's license in Canada for a limited period. No need for an international license.
