    Spy Shots: '06 Toyota Supercar

Toyota has been eyeing Nissan's success with the revived 350Z - and apparently, from spy pictures nabbed this week, it's been a little jealous of supercars like the Porsche Carrera GT, too. Toyota 's been caught testing what some insiders are calling the "TXS," a limited-production exotic that might be powered by a V-10 engine worth 500 hp. Pictures show the TXS with enough cladding to disguise much of its shape, but clearly, this is no Celica or MR2-sized sportscar. Insiders suggest the car will tip in at less than 3000 pounds, giving its 500-hp powerplant (with 370 lb-ft of torque) a serious chance at catching the likes of the Porsche and Benz supercars. Top speed could reach 190 mph, the same league as the 550-hp Ford GT. Whether the drivetrain offers any version of Toyota 's hybrid technology is unknown.

Toyota getting supercar envy? The world had better watch out!

But it would be a strange move on their part... word is, they're phasing out sports cars due to poor sales... what gives?

Maybe they are trying a new flag-ship for their cars? A fresh look maybe.

The Enzo costs five times as much as the Ford GT, and is extremely powerful and light...

The Ford GT is Ford's version of the stripped down, affordable supercar. The reason that the Ford GT is often compared to the Ferrari 360 and the Lamborghini Gallardo is that those are the cars in its price range.

Even if Toyota builds a 500hp cut-price supercar, it's likely to come in around the price of the new Dodge Viper... around 80 thousand dollars... cheap for a supercar, but still out of our league.

the front looks like a Celica..

    OT:Koenigsegg CCR

The CCR goes from rest to 100km/h in a staggering 3.2 seconds – which is a good second faster than a V8 supercar – and storms on to a seemingly unfeasible 395km/h. an attempt will be made to push the car beyond 400km/h, and set another Guinness record, later this year

Let's put these figures into perspective. A V12 426kW Lamborghini Murcielago takes 3.7 seconds to hit 100km/h and has a quarter mile time of 11.8 seconds.

The frankly frightening Ferrari Enzo, again powered by a vicious V12, with 485kW, does the dash to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds and the quarter mile in 11.4 seconds.

Both these cars are acknowledged as bullet-fast blitzers, yet both of them would be left looking faintly silly by the Koenigsegg.
The engine is a 4.7-litre supercharged V8 that produces 601kW (that's more than two SS Commodores) and 920Nm of torque (which is more than a jumbo jet engine, probably). Obviously, it's no ordinary V8 we're talking about here. In fact, the engine is made of super lightweight materials, including aerospace specified aluminium alloy and titanium.

In total, the engine weighs just 215kg.

The Koenigsegg, which makes its first ever appearance down under at AIMS, gets its tarmac-tearing performance to the ground through a six-speed sequential manual gearbox and massive 19-inch front and 20-inch rear tyres.

Toyota is probably trying to reap some benefits from its F1 program... The engine has a similar configuration sa F1 car nila. Its like how the BMW M5 is being marketed as having an engine derived from F1 technology.
