    Cast vs. Forged

Cast centers have the advantage of allowing the designer more styling freedom because the casting process is a more flexible method of creating a wheel center. It allows the designer to use a more organic approach to design with more fluid shapes. The downside to casting is that the finished product has no grain structure and is quite porous. Until recently, most commodity and OEM wheels have been gravity cast (heavier and thicker).

The forging process for creating a wheel center begins with the creation of the forging dies. These dies are quite expensive and must withstand a tremendous amount of abuse. The dies are installed in a 3500 ton, 35' tall hydraulic press. A 7" diameter cylinder of 6061-T6 aluminum is loaded into the press and 20 tons per square inch of pressure is applied to the cylindrical stock to squeeze it into shape in the dies. This process, called isothermal forging, removes any porosity that may exist in the material and also aligns the grain structure of the material in a radial configuration. The part is then heat treated and aged. This process allows us to design a center that is both lighter and stronger than a cast part. The forged part is then CNC machined to its final configuration. Each center is deburred by hand and shot peened to remove any sharp edges or stress risers. It is then sent to receive an aerospace clear hard anodized finish.

Cast and forged centers are available in various thicknesses to accommodate different brake and offset configurations.

    makikiexplain na din

forged is welding while cast is hinubog

forged is not welding. Forged means you force the material into a mold using a lot of pressure. Casting means you melt the material then pour it into the mold.

The difference of cast and forged parts? Cast parts tend to snap and break when forced beyond their strength. Forged parts will bend first.

BTW, i disagree that m-bike parts are prefered to be cast than forged. The reason why cast parts are "prefered" is the price. Otherwise, if price isn't an issue, forged parts are prefered because of strength and weight reasons.

if you had a choice go with forged wheels like volk (original ha and not the rotas), these are SUPER strong and i have not seen any that have had any serious damage yet despite the punishment i've seen some guys put them thru

    Magnesium is lighter BUT softer.

btw, pure magnesium burns like a flare in pure oxygen.

there are hardly any magnesium wheels on the market. most are made of aluminum.

one of the only magnesium wheels i've seen are on the autoplus race evo with the blue volk racing te37's. may nakalagay na FORGED MAG sa side. i remember the owner telling me around 200T + just for the rims alons. hehe!

if you are lucky, the original mini-lites are made of magnesium alloy. Later, aluminum copies later came out.

    in simplest terms:

    Cast (casting)

magbuhos ng tunaw na aluminum sa mold para makagawa ng wheel.

    Forged (forging)

isang bloke ng aluminum (or magnesium in case of TE37 Forged Mag) sabay binagsakan ng parang pang stamp to create a wheel.
