EXPECT action to pick up now that SsangYong’s Actyon Sports has hit town. Local SsangYong importer and distributor Competitive Supreme previewed the Actyon Sports pick-up to the press recently and for sure, it definitely looks ? err, like nothing else. Tagged as a four-door, Sports Utility Truck (SUT), the lines and shape on this one look like its been geared to appeal to the younger crowd segment or those who traditionally eschew pick-ups because they look too conservative and boxy.
Certainly, the interior is refined, almost car-like, and is now the class-leading cabin in terms of presentation and creature comforts.
After all, does not a list made up of – take a deep breath – an eight-way power driver’s seat (with adjustable lumbar support), tilt adjustable steering wheel, front centre arm rest, height- and tilt-adjustable front head restraints, electric folding door mirrors, a dash fit audio system with controls on the steering wheel, speed-sensing door locks, three rear head restraints and a rear centre arm rest, sound thoroughly inviting?
Also noteworthy is the suspension set-up – double wishbone with coil springs at the front, and a five-link rear axle with coil springs and dampers instead of the leaf springs usually found on pick-ups.
Powering the Actyon is a XDi 200 XVT 2.0l direct injection diesel block. The common rail unit with variable geometry turbo puts out 141Ps at 4,000rpm and 310Nm of torque from 1,800- 2,700rpm, a standout given its small engine displacement. (The Actyon actually claims more power than all the 2.5l, and even 3.0l, diesel pick-ups in our market, except for the new Ford Ranger TDCi.)
Fuel economy is claimed to be a miserly 6.2l per 100km in an extra urban (highway) cycle.
