Romi Garduce Waiting for ‘Midnight Assault’
IF any Filipino could reach the summit of Mount Everest in the next few days, he would plant the Philippine flag on it by high noon—after climbing the whole night toward the world’s tallest peak, hopefully with the weather calm and cooperative.
Romi Garduce, the Pinoy most likely to first reach the summit, revealed this plan on Friday, even as he said he is still cooling his heels at the Everest Base Camp for his planned “midnight assault.” “Garduch” is also waiting for sherpas hired by the Nepalese government to fix the routes from Camp 4 toward the peak of the 29,035-foot mountain, even as he prepares himself mentally for the difficult journey ahead.
“Actually, as soon as the summit is opened and we hear news that someone has stepped on the peak—meaning the ‘fix lines’ are finished, I will proceed to Camp 2 and rest for a day,” said the 37-year-old Garduce, who’s backed by gear maker The North Face. “I would then proceed to Camp 3 and rest a bit. That’s the last place I reached recently,” the seasoned climber from Balanga, Bataan, added. “Then I’ll go straight to Camp 4, and that’s where the ‘assault’ begins.”
Garduce, an information technology specialist when not adventuring, said he and his guides will rest about 3 to 4 hours at Camp 4 before setting out for Everest’s summit at nightfall, all the while praying for good weather to aid their way.
Sudden snowstorms and the subzero conditions have claimed the life of many climber at Everest, but Garduce said he would be careful not to stretch himself or his supply of oxygen, which he will use from Camp 4 onward.
“Definitely, we’ll start using oxygen from there. We’ll be walking all night until the morning. Hopefully we get there [summit] before lunch, and the good weather holds.”
Philippine TV giant GMA Network is covering Garduce’s climb and is preparing just as meticulously as the intrepid adventurer.
GMA’s crew is testing its generators and C-band satellite equipment for regular transmissions of the clear, crisp images of the icy, desolate landscape and mountainous terrain that Garduce hopes to climb and summit before the Everest climbing season closes at the end of the month.
Climbers who dream of “summitting” Everest can only do so during the warm summer month of May, when the mountain, the highest in the world, thaws a little bit. The narrow window for climbing closes by June, and Everest stands impregnable and impossible to climb for the rest of the year.
