Well, the opening ceremonies for this UAAP season will be different from the past seasons, as it will be held at the Quadricentennial Pavillion inside the UST campus on September 3 (no basketball games to be held on the same date; official basketball playdate will be held the next day).

UST to stage UAAP Season 79 inaugurals

MANILA, Philippines – Host University of Santo Tomas deviates from the usual practice as it ushers in UAAP Season 79 with a ballroom competition and a concert party at the UST campus on Sept. 3 with the kickoff games set the next day yet.

UST Institute of Physical Education and Athletics secretary Gilda Camus said the opening festivities will start with the ballroom dancing – one of the new offerings in the league – at 2:30 p.m. at the Quadricentennial Pavilion.

From there, the student-athletes from the eight member universities will go to the Plaza Mayor in front of the Main Building – the same area where Pope Francis was received by representatives of various religious groups during his Papal visit in 2015 – for a simple opening rites around 5:30 p.m.

The festivities will then conclude with the “Dare to Dream” concert.

“Basically we decided to do the opening here in UST because we want the other universities to experience the Thomasian culture,” Camus said.

The opening games will tip off Sept. 4, although Camus declined to announce the pairings and the venue yet.

“We decided to hold the opening separate from the games because in previous years, players who had games on opening day were weary after the long waiting hours brought about by the long program,” she said.

Camus announced that Atty. Rebo Saguisag was retained as commissioner of the basketball competitions for Season 79.
who will be the teams to beat this season?

The prohibitive favorites are dlsu and they're going against the defending champs feu in about an hour's time. Let's see if super archer import ben mbala will be able to hold his temper this time around. Nagka near melee kasi itong 2 teams ng nag scrimmage sila about 2 weeks ago

So far so good for DLSU at 2-0 na sila. Mbala was a beast today, scoring 30 points including 3 jams.

^ danding won't be pleased if they don't get the championship this season, and that's a vast understatement. they moved heaven and earth to pry coach aldrin ayo from letran and acquire ben mbala from the southwestern university of cebu. if these costly acquisitions don't translate to a championship this year, the original pinoy pacman will unleash holy hell on everybody involved in the dlsu basketball program

Mbala is expected to dominate, surprise of the season would be Ahanmisi of Adamson. Franz Pumaren is setting up Ritualo plays for him.

Sabi ni consultant Tab na mag prepare daw sa roller coaster ride sa Ateneo Men's BBall Team

Rollercoaster man yan o turbulence sa ere, sasakay pa rin kami

Win or lose, it's the school we choose.

    GO ATENEO! OBF!

it's going to be a long season for the blue eagles.

i watched the game yesterday from behind the team bench and you can sense the seriousness of the situation. the infamous sacking of the 7 impact players from blue eagle varsity ball due to academic deficiencies over the summer will hound recruitment efforts for years to come.

    obf!

IMHO, that was a good move.

Why sacrifice academic standards for this. Even Greg Slaughter has to comply with the academic standard and during that 5-peat run, it was also total domination.

Tinitignan natin ang bball. But look out for the men's vball team. After dominating the Spiker's Turf, this coming UAAP season will be their playground.

    GO ATENEO! OBF!

Agreed. That's one aspect of the UAAP that ADMU and UP are very strict with. Academics come first.

i have no problems w/ that. qpi casualites have always been there as exemplified by the 1969 ncaa championship squad where the blue eagles lost half the team due to poor academic performance. heck, it's been a yearly phenomenon in the ateneo athletics scene since time immemorial. but a system was put into place by coach norman black and then team manager paolo trillo wherein recruits were guided and shepherded accordingly when it came to balancing schoolwork and sports duties. and this model was basically adopted by all of ateneo de manila sports. so the question is, what happened to this system when the duo left loyola heights?

i think some team officials were remiss in their duties w/c resulted to the withdrawal of arvin tolentino and company (they apparently made the uaap grade standard, but not the school's grade cut-off). being in ateneo is difficult enough for the ordinary student, how much more for student-athletes who aren't accustomed to the rigors of academic life among the jesuits.

I am impressed with NU's team play. Too bad they don;t have that individual player that they can go to in close games. But if they improve over the course of the season, they'll be a tough team to beat.

Matthew Aquino's height can really benefit NU. Kahit pang distract lang sa opposing big guys, malaking bagay na.
