Baculi in a dilemma over last two picks
Thursday, December 6, 2007 NAKHON RATCHASIMA – Instead of worrying over the opposition in the SEA Games basketball competition, national team coach Junel Baculi is trying to figure out who among from his crack group of shooters will fill up the final two spots in the RP team roster.
One day before the submission of the final list in the team managers’ meeting today, Baculi remains undecided.
“They’re all deadly. I can’t choose right now,” said Baculi, referring to
Chris Tiu, Patrick Cabahug, Jonathan Fernandez, Erick dela Cuesta and Jeff Chan who are battling it out for the last two berths in the team.
“It’s really hard to decide who among them will make the 12-man team,” said Baculi.
The 15-man RP squad backed by Harbour Centre arrived in this Thai province the other day and held two practice sessions yesterday. The nationals will train once more today before they see action against lowly Cambodia tomorrow at the Keelapirum Stadium here.
Unfortunately, only 12 of them will be officially listed and can play with the team.
“Everyday we’ll have an evaluation, but all will go through a process. I treated them fairly, so I guess nobody will complain if they didn’t make the 12-man team,” Baculi said.
The RP coach however, said already assured of slots in the team are guards Jason Castro, Fil-Am Gabe Norwood, Boyet Bautista, Eugene Tan, Al Vergara, Beau Belga, Erick Rodriguez, team captain Allan Salangsang and reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player (MVP) Jervy Cruz.
“These 10 players have their certain roles in the team, they will surely make things happen for us. And add two of the five players in the team, and we’ll definitely have a very strong unit,” said Baculi.
After Cambodia, the Filipino cagers next take on Indonesia on Dec. 9, followed by Malaysia on the 11th and the host on the 13th in the final day of the single-round robin format.
Team officials led by team manager and Philippine Basketball League (PBL) commissioner Chino Trinidad and assistant Eric Arejola expressed confidence the nationals will bring home the basketball gold again based on the way they saw three of the four teams in scrimmages yesterday.
