DoH nagbabala: Contact lens nakabubulag!

NAGBABALA ang Department of Health (DoH) sa mga contact lens users sa maling paggamit at pangangalaga sa pagsuot nito dahil sa posibleng makakuha ng impeksyon na magresulta sa pagkabulag ng mata.

Ang babala ay inilabas ni DoH Secretary Francisco Duque III, matapos ang dumaraming ulat ng pagkakaroon ng fungal keratitis sa mga gumagamit ng soft contact lens.

Ang fungal keratitis ay isang uri ng impeksyon sa mata sa mga taong nagsusuot ng soft contact lens na maaaring magresulta sa pagkabulag o pagkawala ng infected eye.

Kabilang sa mga sintomas nito ay pamumula ng mata, eye pain, blurry vision, eye discharge at sensitivity sa ilaw.

Upang maiwasan ang impeksyon dapat na maghugas muna ng kamay sa pamamagitan ng sabon at tubig at patuyuin ito bago hawakan ang contact lenses. Nararapat din umano na palaging malinis ang lenses at palitan kada buwan upang maiwasan din ang impeksyon.

Inirekomenda rin ni Duque sa mga gumagamit nito na linisin at itago ang mga lenses ayon sa mga prescription ng mga eye-care practitioners at solution manufacturers. Mahigpit na ipinagbabawal ang paghihiram ng contact lens at solutions.

Bagama't ayon kay Duque ang ulat ng fungal keratitis sa mga soft contact lens users ay bunsod sa paggamit ng RenuMoisture LOC Lens Cleaner, isang produkto na hindi pa commercially available sa Pilipinas. Posible umano ayon sa DoH na ilan sa mga traveler ang nagdala nito sa bansa.

Nabatid na ang RenuMoisture Loc Lens cleaner ay gawa ng Bausch and Lomb, na distributor ng multi-purpose solutions sa bansa.

Boluntaryo nang sinuspendi ng nasa-bing kumpanya ang kanilang shipment dahil nasangkot ang lens cleaner sa Singapore at Hongkong noong Pebrero nga-yong taon sa ulat ng fungal keratitis infections na nagkaroon ang US noon pang Hunyo ng nakaraang taon.

Hinikayat naman ni Duque ang mga eye care practitioners na i-report sa DoH-National Epidemiology Center ang mga soft contact lens users na may sintomas ng fungal keratitis.

buti na lang pala i was forced to wear glasses uli...

ang mahal kasi ng frame na binigay sa optical shop, titanium pala, so para masulit, tago muna contacts. hehehe!

Been using contact lens for 8 years now. Septocare solution binibili ko lagi. So far ok naman. Ginagawa ko at most 2 years lang tinatagal ng lens ko then bili ako bago. Although ung dad ko nagkaron ng infection from contact lens dati kaya balik salamin sya.

same thing happened to me. used contacts for 2 years (back in high school) then had an infection, eto am back to my nerdy look.

hmmm. depends on your eye hygiene yan siguro.
i've been wearing contacts for 10 years na. di naman humihina bista ko.
i just make sure i don't leave my contacts on every night, wash them properly, use disinfectant regularly and store them properly. most important is kung disposable yung lens mo is to dispose them off on the due disposal date, don't over extend them dahil talagang tinutubuan yan ng bacteria and fungus. i also use eye lubricants pag dry na. nakaka irritate kasi yan ng eye kung tuyo na, which will lead to infection.

from renu i just switched to septocare myself. medyo natakot ako maski na yung product ng renu na pinull-out sa shelves abroad ay di pa available dito

i agree w/ happy_gilmore. as long as you use proper sop in keeping your contacts clean, iwas yun sa eye infection

Mom ko gumagamit ng contacts dati ok naman..Balak ko pa naman magcontact lens kaso permanent hindi kase ako sanay ng tanggal kabit ng contacts.....

Can't imagine myself going back to eyeglasses for everyday wear. Laking convenience ng contact lens as compared to eyeglasses e. Kaya alaga na lang talaga.

....dun sa isang article na nabasa ko (medyo OA yung posted article sa taas). go back to the basic way of cleaning contacts (rubbing). yung mga solutions kasi ngayon puro 1-step no rub formulas eh, which they say is not really effective in ridding of the accumulated dirt.

freshlook gamit ko though ok naman yun septocare, i put on my CL pag play badminton, swim o sa beach

i used disposable din pala mas convenient=)

afaik the ones w/ moistureloc from renu were the ones pulled out of the shelves

i use Renu and wala naman prob, just make sure to remove the contact lens every night and clean/soak it in the solution overnight.

never tried contacts before, from glasses straight to lasik naku, grabe ka handicap pagnaka glasses ka pala, 13 years aku wearing glasses btw, sarap lang ng feeling na you dont need glasses nor contancts anymore
