POLICY BOARD FINDS P.C.U. GUILTY OF SWITCHING IDENTItY OF ITS PLAYER
NCAA suspends PCU
THE National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has suspended Philippine Christian University (PCU) in all events of the forthcoming 83rd season, according to league president Vincent Fabella of Jose Rizal University (JRU).
The suspension is effective immediately, a statement from the NCAA policy board which was e-mailed to newspapers yesterday said. The board came up with the suspension after a special meeting also yesterday at JRU, the Season 83 general host.
“The findings of both the inquiry of NCAA management committee and own investigation of PCU has proven that there was indeed identity switching,” said Fabella in the statement. “The policy board considered these findings as a grave violation of the core objectives of the NCAA.”
The policy board, the statement furthered, also upheld the recommendations of the management committee to forfeit all games of the Baby Dolphins, return their second place trophy together with individual awards and ban the player involved from future participation in the NCAA.
Fabella said: “The board wishes to stress that all member-schools of NCAA have much to learn from this experience and that the board decision should not be interpreted as singling out of PCU. The board believes that institutional responsibility is important in the NCAA, hence its decision.”
PCU president Dr. Oscar Suarez admitted his school is gravely affected by the suspension.
“[Due to] some erring persons and athletes, PCU, as an NCAA member-institution was gravely affected,” he said in a statement.
The suspension, he said, “is a lesson learned for us and be an eye-opener to other NCAA member-schools who might fall to prey to this situation in the process of recruiting players with questionable eligibility particularly from the province.”
PCU, Suarez said, has humbly accepted the NCAA policy board decision.
PCU’s suspension is similar to what was meted De La Salle in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. De La Salle fielded two ineligible players in its men’s basketball team and was suspended for the league’s entire 69th season, also in all sports and events.
