ano kaya magandang DOG for my Son who is 4 yrs old? and at the same time para meyrong kakahol if intruders came inside our house. Ayoko ng Toy Dog kasi masyadong maselan and may take a lot of time sa maintenance (grooming). Puwede ba yung Labrador or Rottweiler?Any suggestion guys. My budget is about P4K only.

Honestly, sakin kahit halo-halong breed (askal) ok lang basta malinis ang records ng health nila... Hirap din kasi kung mamahalin na aso at mahal ang maintenance... Unless di issue ang budget, of course.

Same here. Kahit askal, oks na - basta malinits and healthy yung aso. Yung unica hija ko, askal ang unang pet dog nya (she was about 5 years old nung binigay sa kin yung dog). Well, hinde pleasing to the eye yung hitsura nung aso pero I think my kid loves it more than she loves me. Fortunately, buhay pa yung dog.

As for the guard dog part, aba'y ang tapang nung asong yun - kahit mas malaking aso sa kanya eh hinde sumusuko. Nadala ko na sa vet yun kase nakipagbabag sa Dalmatian nung dati naming kapitbahay. Ayun, wakwak yung leeg. Buti na lang hinde namatay. Yung Dalmatian? Putol yung kalati ng kaliwang tenga, he he he.

Just an added info for you on askals. It's true they are cheap to maintain, hindi maselan sa pagkain, excellent guard dogs but be careful because they can be vicious too.

When my daughter was 4 years old she made the mistake of running after her ball near our dog who was then eating. The dog attacked her on the head. Buti nalang hindi nasugatan. When my wife was cleaning near it while it was eating it also attacked my wife by biting her arm. Again, no wound. I think the dog only wanted to scare them away, not to inflict injury perhaps out of their instinct to protect their food.

Since then, I have been the only one to feed the dog. I also showed him who's boss by beating it severely after those two attacks. I can approach it even when its eating and it will move out of my way. More than treating me as its friend, i think my dog treats me like the leader of the pack.

On the plus side, matibay talaga ang mga askals.

It has been with us since it was a puppy (a gift from a neighbor.) Amazing toilet habits even without training! Even as a pup it will not defecate on its box but run out to the grass to do it. We used to let it roam freely but has to chain it since it began chasing people fiercely. Twice it went home bleeding on the head and neck with a sharp wound (man made, no doubt.) One side of its head is bent inward as though the skull was dented (again, man-made i think.) When it was younger, I accidentally backed up on it on my car and run over its entire left rear leg. It limped for only a week. On the 3 occassions it got sick (wont eat, coughing) I inserted cheap but powerful human antibiotics on chopped hotdog for the dog to eat. It recovered quickly. All of its siblings and parent (dogs from our neighbor) are aleady dead, but this one (6-years old) still lives and its very hyper-active. It will brawl with other dogs without provocation if I let it.

One other thing, if you plan on getting an askal. When you see it eating grass, don't stop it. It's their way to fight stomach problems considering all the left-over stuff you feed it.

askals make good pets and guard dogs. i've found them to be more hardy compared to purebreeds and they're low maintenance.

PAWS evaluates the dogs at the shelter for adoptability.

    PAWS Website
    http://www.paws.org.ph/

    Adoption procedure:

    1. Accomplish Adoption Application
    2. Interview by Adoption Counselor
    3. Meeting the pet
    4. On approval, payment of adoption fee *
    5. Spay/neuter of adopted pet (if not already done)
    6. Scheduling of pickup or delivery
    7. Signing of Adoption Agreement

    * The Adoption fee is intended to help defray some of the cost of maintaining and preparing your pet for adoption.

    Benefits of adopting from PARC:

    1. Spay/neuter surger
    2. De-worming
    3. Rabies vaccination (3 months and older)
    4. Discounted veterinary fees from participating clinics
    5. Free veterinary consultation for your adopted pet
    6. A lifetime companion

    (taken from the PAWS website)

    if i may add...

Maintenance needs to be considered for purebreeds with long or wiry coats (dedicated grooming required for this unless you want to take your dog to the groomers).

you might want to check out this link to help you choose what breed is right for you and your family: http://www.proplan.com/breed_selecto...or_frames.aspx

    hope this helps.

thanks guys to your expert advise. Now I'm confuse more than before....he...he... Seems that if you wrapped everything, askals x has the edge with regards to maintenance, etc. Ang sabi din ng friend ko is to get the dog while still a pup. I called up PAWS and unfortunately wala silang puppies available at this moment. Labrador is out coz it's too big for my kid and specially too big for my budget Now, I have to look for the x breed askals. Anyone know where to scout them?

You know, it's a lot better if you adopt dogs at PAWS. Not only you help a dog from being euthanized but you help a fellow person to continue saving unwanted dogs.

And askals are low maintenance than the purebreeds. And their smarter (I had lots of askals before who knows how to go out and go home. Meanwhile, my purebreed labrador doesn't know that a jeep is coming, thank god for the leash.), healthier (because all the weak genes are gone due to cross breeding) unlike purebreeds who have distinct weaknesses.

I had German Shepherds too, but the askals will hold a special place in my heart.

    Here's PAWS number: (02) 4751688 and 0917-8315970

thanks bunny. I'll try to contact PAWS (my first time to hear this). Askal shouldn't be a problem for me. I'll take David's advise.

word of caution lang if you are going to adopt a dog. be sure you ask about the dog's history. stay clear of mean looking dogs, they might be vicious. yung friend ko they adopted a dog and after having the dog with them for a year and several instances where the dog would growl at them they still insisted in keeping the dog. one day the dog attacked his daughter, bit off her nose and cheeks. she had to undergo several plastic surgery operations to restore her face. when they went to the animal shelter and insisted on getting the dog's history it turned out that the dog was brought in by the original owner for disposal because it was vicious, it bit the original owner twice without provocation.

    :dito:
We had a jap spitz we had to put down once. Sobrang vicous and agressive at nangangagat na. One day when he bit the kneecap of our helper(which required stitches) we had no choice but to shoot him. This dog was with us since he was a puppy pa ha. May mga rotten apples talaga minsan.

Try to choose a small to medium-sized dog din for your son. Big dogs kasi can bump him and knock him over while playing.
