Just received this from a friend..

Bangungot has killed a male nurse of UERMMH. It is sudden death in adults
which cause them to die while sleeping. Many theories have been put
forward as its cause. However, here is an article which sheds some light
to the cause of this malady. Please read on.

ARTICLE FROM THE PHILIPPINE STAR ....

The reported cause of actor Rico Yan's death is nightmare or bangungot. Medical investigators in China , Japan and several Asian countries who performed autopsies on persons who died from "acute hemorrhagic pancreatitis" found out that the majority of them had eaten NOODLES as their supper. This was a startling finding.

However, it wasn't the noodles that caused nightmares but dehydration.
Imbibing even with a few drinks of alcohol or just eating noodles immediately before bedtime compound this on an empty stomach will trigger an electrolyte imbalance and other factors that causes a person to dehydrate or lose water.

It is therefore advisable for a person to take several glasses of water before bedtime if he had a few or several alcoholic drinks. Avoid eating noodles before bedtime, but if you can not avoid it, allow at least two hours for the body to digest the noodles before hitting the sack and drink plenty of water.

The most important thing is, never go thirsty when going to bed and be sure you have plenty of water during your 8-hour rest.

    Tip noted.

Gigising ka kasi in the middle of your sleep, para mag-CR.

holden, iba ang bangungot na nakamamatay sa nightmare, same lang kasi ang tawag sa tagalog. bangungot/nightmare is not the same as bangungot/asian male sleeping death syndrome.

there was a study made by US doctors on several asian males who died of this. note it only happens to asian males but not to other races. they found out several things in common:

    1. they all were tired/physically stressed the day before
    2. they ate a big asian meal - plenty of rice or noodles

the combination tends to result to one thing - lack of potasium in the blood. the physical stress already consumed a lot of the electrolyte needed for proper breathing and heart function, then carbohydrates (from the rice or noodles) actually rob more potasium away from the blood for the body to be able to metabolize. the result is a very low potasium level in the blood and this causes 1) loss of breathing reflex because the chest muscles suffer from severe cramps, and 2) heart palpitations. as this happens during sleep any attempt to wake up the person seem futile because the person is actually undergoing a sensation akin to drowning (mabigat ang dibdib, parang may nakapatong sa dibdib) and could not speak.

Correct ka diyan sir! Drink plenty of water before sleeping. Naji- jingle ka kasi 2- 3hours after, kaya
magigising ka. Kahit maihi ka during your sleep, magigising ka pa rin kasi nga na- wee- wee ka sa bed
(yuck!). Iwas bangungot nga naman pag nagising ka.

OT...
Now, pag binabangungot ka raw,
Kapag sumama ka, then

Hehehe... I remember nung bata pa ako (i think i was around 5 or 6 years old that time), pag panaginip ko ay nagwiwiwi ako, napawiwi din ako sa bed.

Even if I drink a glass of water before sleeping, i don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to go to the john. But that varies from person to person i guess.

I do drink 1 glass of water before going to bed. 1 also after waking up. Helps with sleep, digestion, hypertension daw eh.

I make it a point to pray every
night before i go to sleep.
    ipinagkaloob Niya at ipagkakaloob pa.

    1. don't eat a big meal when you are tired
    2. don't go to sleep with a full stomach. allow some time to digest the food before sleeping. if you must snack on something before going to bed then just make it a light snack.
    3. take some electrolyte supplement (like buko juice), or even vitamin pills that have potasium

    Good tips.

I have sleeping problems (apnea/paralysis) and I've noticed that it's sometimes associated with a heavy meal for dinner... pork... pizza and... yes... you have to be very stressed and tired before sleeping.

Seems like you can lessen the breathing problems by sleeping upright or propped up. But that might just be me.

I haven't considered the potassium idea, but I already take medicine that has potassium, and it does seem to lessen the symptoms.

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...
