I have a 6 month-old baby and she is having these very expensive shots like rotaviral (3600) and pneumococcal (4600) & infantrix (3600) making us in financial distress everymonth. she already had two shots of each and is now due for the last shots of each of those. are these really necessary for my baby? any fellow parents?pls comment

Some type of prevention is better than the available cures..though not all vaccines have really been very well tested to be effective, it would wouldn't hurt to invest on these things..

After all, in this world, health is wealth (not the monetary wealth)

I can't believe somebody is weighing the cost of expenses versus the health of their children!

The vaccines will pay off in the long run. Consider it an investment. Having a child is never cheap, but a parent doesn't think of that.

Shots for the first 2 years is very important and necessary. Kung may malapit na
Health Center sa inyo available halos lahat ng vaccines ng baby for free or any
donation. Tyagaan lang, kung di available tsaka mo na lang pa-vaccine sa
    Pediatrician n’ya.

Merck has been heavily promoting its HPV vaccine. Pansin nyo sa major dailies there are these full page ads about HPV/cervical cancer.

before daw maging ***ually active ang mga girls, dapat mag pa-vaccinate. 15T ata

i don't think free sa health centers.. BCG lang yata free don tsaka yung iodine drops..

dapat talaga i complete ang vaccines nang mga bata.. minsan kaya naman nagmamahal eh malaki ang patong nang mga pedia.. shop around for other pedia and compare their prices.. syempre kung sa st. lukes ka papa vaccine mahal don.. don sa makati area.. try nyo yung pedia nang mga kids ko.. medyo mababa sya sumingil.. Dra. Dumaual, her clinic is at Primo Rivera, a side street of Vito Cruz Extension (near makati colliseum).

Ever hear of the saying "an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure". I realize the shots are expensive but which one will cost you more? The shots or the hospital bill if the child gets sick.

you can easily spend ten to a hundred times more than the amount you pay for vaccines if your child eventually gets sick from the diseases the vaccines themselves are designed to prevent.

infantrix is a locally available vaccine for dpt (diptheria, pertussis, tetanus). if the pedia rates are too expensive, it's sometimes available through health centers (half-price or sometimes free). i haven't had a personal experience on the hands-on treatment of patients with diptheria and pertussis (thanks to the vaccine) but during pedia rotation i had seen two 3 year-old patients with severe cases of tetanus. the kids were fed through tubes inserted through the nose because of lockjaw. they were constantly hooked up to a cocktail of various drugs to lower bp, control heart rate and prevent seizures. it's excruciating to look at the kids whenever they had seizures - their bodies would curl up into a C shape with their heads nearly touching their backs. it was also pretty easy to trigger seizure attacks - sometimes even the slight beeps of the cardiac monitor was enough to trigger full blown seizures. after 2 weeks in the pedia icu, only one of them survived the ordeal.

the pneumococcal vaccine is pretty darn expensive but its only a one shot deal. and its pretty good defense against invasive pneumococcal disease which has a pretty high mortality rate.

although the rotaviral vaccine isn't a standard item in the philippines' expanded program of immunization, it isn't exactly bad too have a pedia who's aggressive in terms of prevention. the hospital bill for a two day confinement of a dehydrated child can easily amount to 50k up.

Pare magka-age lang babies natin. I have never for once questioned the need for the shots kasi tama sinabi ng iba dito. mas malaki bayad pag na-ospital sila.

Nothing is too expensive for my child's heath....

Besides, after the first 2 years, halos wala na rin expensive vaccines...

    Ipon nalang pampyansa... hehe...

Kinda reminds me of this episode of Dr. House... hehe

"You know another really good business? Teeny tiny baby coffins.

You can get them in frog green, fire engine red. Really!

The antibodies in yummy Mummy only protect the kid for six months, which is why these companies think they can gouge you. They think that you'll spend whatever they ask to keep your kid alive.

Wanna change things? Prove 'em wrong. Few hundred parents like you decide they'd rather let their kid die than cough up 40 bucks for a vaccination, believe me, prices will drop really fast!"
You might wanna ask your local health clinic, they might be able to offer you the same vaccine at a lower cost. But I understand your question, it's not a matter of whether it's worth it or not, but the financial burden lang...

Also, ask your doctor if you can stretch the vaccination scheds a little, they're not set in stone anyway, para at least di masyadong dikit-dikit ang gastos...

I share the sentiments of most parents here, my children's health is top priority.

Most will agree na tayo na magkasakit wag lang mga anak natin, specially when they're very young... di mo matiis pag sila ang nahihirapan....

One suggestion is to source the vaccines yourself and have your pedia administer it to lessen your cost.... an anti-flu vaccine can cost up to 3t sa pedia but i believe you can get it bet 1500 to 2t outside so malaki na din savings
    Hope this helps

I agree. Last month 3,000 yung binayad ko for the vaccine from the Pedia, pero sabi ng nurse sa ofc namin, pwede ako magpabili sa kanya nung same vaccine for 1,800.
