I play some chess. I'm not any good though. When I was in HS, my cousins in elementary school beat me all the time. Nowadays, I just recreate great matches on my chessboard or play with someone who is as bad as I am.....usually my uncle.

I have a regular sized chess set at home and a tiny portable one for road trips.

My cousins in the PH taught me how to play chess (and Game of the Generals).

That time power house ang ue and defending champ sa uaap sa chess. panahon ni gm nelson mariano that time 90's. Dinako bumalik after try out kahit pinababalik ako hehe alam kong wala ako chance makapasok. Super yung batch ni gm mariano nun. IM na ata sya that time at mga nm mga ka team mate nya hehe.

Surprise your cousin by learning these basic tactics. These are added arsenal for you and won't take much time to learn.

Sa below master level kasi, common cause ng talo ay tactical blunders/losing piece. Improving at tactics will lessen these blunders.

The shortest mate in chess is two moves. This is called Fool's Mate. Kapag ang kalaban natalo ng madalian, ibig sabihin nun ay sobrang beginner ng kalaban at hindi niya makita ang simple threats.

Also in the opening, trying the scholar's mate is not recommended. White won't gain anything from that set up and black easily gets a comfortable game.

Some people say that chess became so popular during the 1972 match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. Almost every house had a chess board out in the open and visitors were invited to play. A "golden age" for chess enthusiasts. So they say.

Magnus Carlsen wins third world chess title

Magnus Carlsen of Norway has won the World Chess Championship for the third consecutive time after defeating challenger Sergey Karjakin of Russia.
Carlsen sealed victory following three weeks of play and a series of tiebreakers in New York.
Karjakin tied against Carlsen in 12 regular rounds but was beaten in the final phase of four quickfire games.
Organisers said the event was followed by about six million chess fans around the world.
Hundreds of spectators paid between $100 and $500 to watch the games at a former fish market in Manhattan, separated from the two grandmasters by soundproof glass.

My favorite player was Paul Morphy and Kasparov. I am a below average player, when I was at PMI Escolta log time ago, nakikipagpustahan ako.
Mabuti na lang at tabla-talo palagi. I saw Mastr Eugene Torre in one of his simul exhibit games against 20 players. Olats lahat except one na medyo nakainom pa!
    nakainom pa!
