KORAT, Thailand - The men's boxing tournament at the SEA Games was thrown into disarray Thursday when Philippine fighters retired from their bouts, alleging biased judging.
Filipinos were scheduled to box in seven of the 10 gold medal bouts against host nation Thailand, but four opted not to complete their fights, gifting the titles to their Thai opponents.
"We are not blaming Thailand. We are blaming the referees and the judges and the jury because we're not getting the real deal here," the Philippines' chef de mission Monico Puentevella said.
"We came here to compete in a spirit of friendship, but yesterday one of our (female) boxers lost 19-0 in a three-round fight. We can't even get a single point. This is too much. It has been going on for a decade everywhere."
Amid huge confusion in a packed arena, athletes from boxing stronghold the Philippines continued to emerge to receive their medals as officials were locked in talks.
"We are telling the judges and jury to shape up otherwise they will destroy the spirit of the games," said Puentevella.
"Our fighters did not come here to be beaten up, they came to fight and compete on a fair playing field."
On Wedneaday, Manny Lopez, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, called the boxing competition a "comic show" after Thailand won six out of seven women's events.
"They should not dishonor us by giving one-sided decisions. I'd not like to be a part of this comic show in Thailand," he told the Bangkok Post.
Controversy also raged on the badminton courts where Indonesia's Olympic badminton champion Taufik Hidayat was ordered to the stands on Wednesday after a heated exchange with an umpire.
Hidayat accused the officials of trying to aid Thailand's Boonsak Ponsana.
There have also been allegations of biased judging in favor of Thai athletes in the weightlifting.
But a Thai badminton official Thursday angrily rejected the complaints.
"There is a technical delegation from all the countries to select" the referees, said Charoen Wattanasain, the chairman of the Badminton Association of Thailand.
He said the umpire in Taufik's game was from Hong Kong, with no incentive to favor the Thai side.
"I told line judges clearly that they must be transparent, and as the chairman of the badminton association, I guarantee that we are transparent and fair," Charoen said.
"Taufik, who has walked out from several tournaments in China, Korea and Japan, was the only one to complain. No other athletes have complained," he added.
The biennial SEA Games have been dogged before by accusations of bias with this year's event marking a role reversal for Thailand, which levied similar claims against the Philippines at the last Games in Manila.
After then-prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra complained of bias in 2005, Thai officials roundly promised to ensure that they would guarantee fair play when the games came here.
