San Mig Coffee walks out of tuneup match against Alaska

It turns out that coffee and milk don’t always make for a perfect combination.

San Mig Coffee walked out of its tuneup match against Alaska on Tuesday at the Reyes Gym after Mixers coach Tim Cone disagreed with a call by the referees.

The Aces were leading 63-50 in the third quarter when San Mig Coffee forward Jerwin Gaco was thrown out of the game for warding off with his elbow against Alaska’s Eddie Laure. Cone vehemently protested the call before leading his team out of the court.

“Cone proceeds to Alaska bench, shakes hands of Aces coaching staff. Tapos ang laro,” wrote veteran journalist Dennis Principe on his Twitter account, where he provided updates on the game.

Cone refused to take calls by InterAKTV on the matter.

Alaska coach Luigi Trillo, meanwhile, said the call on Gaco was correct, saying that it really was flagrant.

It marked the second straight day with a tuneup game involving a PBA team being halted. On Monday, a tuneup game between Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and the Qatar national team was stopped after an altercation between Kerby Raymundo and a Qatari center.

PBA: Bolts get Salvacion, Sharma from Barako for Ballesteros | Sports | GMA News Online | The Go-To Site for Filipinos Everywhere

PBA: Bolts get Salvacion, Sharma from Barako for Ballesteros

In a move to shore up their frontline, the Meralco Bolts made a trade with the Barako Bull, sending the Energy project center Jason Ballesteros, while taking back Sunday Salvacion and Carlos Sharma.

The 6'7" Ballesteros, who was selected seventh over-all at the 2011 PBA Draft, played limited minutes with the Bolts, averaging 1.33 points, 2.33 rebounds, and 0.33 blocks in 8.33 minutes in three games played.

In trading away Ballesteros, Meralco got 6'6" center Carlo Sharma who averaged 2.67 points, 1.5 rebounds in 8.17 minutes in six games played with Barako. Sharma once posted a high of 8.88 points and 4.51 rebounds in 41 games in the 2008-2009 season when the franchise was still named Red Bull.

The Bolts also got 6'3" small forward Sunday Salvacion. The nine-year veteran posted an average of 3.4 points, 0.4 rebounds, 0.2 assists in 11.4 minutes in the five games he played with Barako. It has been a steady decline in numbers for Salvacion, who once averaged a high of 10.63 points and five rebounds with the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the 2006-2007 season.

‘Athletic’ Japeth impresses NBA D-League coach
    By June Navarro
    Philippine Daily Inquirer
    9:52 pm | Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Japeth Aguilar, the former PBA No. 1 pick, got impressive reviews after he showcased his skills before NBA and NBA Development League coaches and officials, according to the Asian Journal, a Filipino-American newspaper based in the United States.

Aguilar, who played for Talk ‘N Text in the PBA, caught the fancy of the NBA D-League squad Bakersfield Jam coaching staff during an open try out held recently at the East Los Angeles College.

“Japeth is an intriguing player,” Jam head coach Will Voigt told the Asian Journal recently. “Obviously, he has length and athleticism. He’s been playing as a four or a five (power forward/center) in the Philippines, we’ll have to transition him into a three (small forward). But he’s shown flashes throughout the weekend that makes you want to see more.”

During the scrimmage, Aguilar scored 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting, pulled down four rebounds, blocked five shots and had an assist in a 62-48 losing effort for his team. More than 80 players joined the tryouts last Saturday. Coaches trimmed the list to 20 with Aguilar among those who made the cut.
say what you will about his quixotic but you have got to tip your hat and smile on japeth's tenacity though. he snubbed a max contract to follow his dreams in exchange for a pittance of what he may be getting if he signed the dotted line w/ his old team

i hope japeth does well. everybody deserves a second chance for me

Minor melee erupts at Air 21-GlobalPort tuneup, but game not halted (VIDEO) | Team Pilipinas

Minor melee erupts at Air 21-GlobalPort tuneup, but game not halted

Another untoward incident marred another tuneup game between two PBA teams, but it was not enough to halt the practice match between Air 21 and GlobalPort at the Moro Lorenzo Gym in Ateneo.

Multiple sources confirmed veteran GlobalPort center Rommel Adducul and Air 21 rookie slotman Yousef Taha got tangled up near the Batang Pier bench in the first half of the tuneup. Members of GlobalPort, including Jondan Salvador and Rabeh Al-Hussaini got into the action, causing Taha to scurry.

One eyewitness account said Taha “got ganged up on and ran away, not just away, out of the gym and almost to the parking lot.”

However, cooler heads prevailed and the game resumed.

It marked the third straight featuring an eventful tuneup game with a PBA team. Last Monday, the tuneup between Ginebra and the Qatar national team was halted because of a scuffle between Kerby Raymundo and a Qatari center. On Tuesday, meanwhile, San Mig Coffee failed to finish its practice game against Alaska.
