I have a Canon PowerShot S3 IS. It's a P&S camera with full manual controls with a 12x zoom. The main difference I see between my camera and an entry level D-SLR is mine only has a fixed lens and my ISO only goes up to 800. Everything else I can control or adjust. Of course, a D-SLR will always top any P&S camera.

Below is a thread full of pictures posted my Canon S3 users:

I see. cge hanap uli ako ng same MP na medyo mas maliit pero malaki ung screen

Ung A430 medyo maliit tapos ung Ixus line din...

Im using a Canon S2 IS, 5MP and it works great! The 12x optical zoom is enough for the usual shots that I make. I have a lot of effects I can make, the image size is selectable to, pictures are superclear on print. Highly recommended.

Hi! you might find this useful.

Recently bought a casio z750. Was hesitant at first because when it comes to (digital) cameras, it's usually canon or sony that's popular. So i checked out the features in their website (http://www.exilim.com/intl/ex_z750/) and was amazed by its features.

Kumpleto na. Hi quality pics (7.2mp) and hi quality video (mpeg4 and not just mpeg - which means pang dvd quality na, without taking too much memory compared to the lower quality mpeg). Dami pa other features (too many to list here) which help novices like me take good quality pics and vids.

So after studying and comparing well with other popular brands, i decided to buy one. I'm glad i did. Mas na-apreciate ko pa yung features lalo (compared to just reading from their website). And the batt life is incredible!

I guess sometimes we shouldn't just look at the popular brands (for any item), we just have to thoroughly check them out and compare to make sure we get the best from our hard-earned bucks.

Hope i was of help to you guys - a way of saying thank you for the advises i've gotten from this forum as well

Touch screen is a gimmick, it's actually quite fussy to use

As for Casio Z1000 it's got too many pixels but too few features...

All Canon A4xx should be avoided...

Most Canon Ixus are all style, no substance...

Got it from my brother's friend at P12k only (brand new). i think smuggled siguro kaya mura, kasi i saw a casio z600 (similar model but less pic and vid quality, and 6mp lang compared to 7.2mp ng z750) at a computer shop sa mall at P16k.

But if you can find a casio z750, it's really worth it (even at P18k - kasi nga digicam and videocam na all-in-one). Wala ko masabing cons ng cam na 'to. Ganda ng design, sleek, light, thin and generous lcd screen for its size. headturner kumbaga sa tsikot...

yah MPEG4 is very nice. in fact yan lang naging use ng slim Kodak digicam ko, I can record 1 hour of 640x480 resolution in a 2GB SD Card. bec. of this I ditched my mini-dv camcorder. useless na eh. MPEG4 is so cool, DVD-quality na, ang dali pa ikopya sa computer, card reader lang tapos file copy lang. eh yun mini-dv, kung one hour yun tape, one hour mo din iintayin mag copy, sobrang waste of time!

    Yeah tapes are so fussy...

I don't think I'll buy a digicam without MPEG4 anymore. So far the brands that have it are Kodak, Casio, Pentax, Sanyo and Samsung...

Sony and Canon don't include it because it'll hurt their camcorder sales...

Casios can stretch a 1GB card to 1 hour of 640x480x30fps video at low quality. High quality mode does 30mins per 1GB.

The Kodak advantage is you can zoom while filming. Casios can't, but Casios can take pictures while filming.

*oldblue, have you tried playing it on those MPEG4 DVD players?

    This thread is very helpful.

I'm in the market for a point-and-shoot camera. From what I've read in the net, the pixel war is over. The trend in point-and-shoot cameras is one that takes the best quality pictures at any given time and situation.

Would-be buyers are now looking for point and shoot cameras with image stabilization and good ISO ranges. From what I've read, the camera which has image stabilization and an acceptable ISO range (up to 800) and is available in the Philippines (for service/warranty issues) is the Canon Digital IXUS 800 (Powershot 700 IS).

    Here's the review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/spec...on_sd700is.asp

Now if I only have the money to buy the darn thing!!!

My Canon S3 shoots great vids in these settings:
    640 x 480 pixels, 30 frames/sec.
    640 x 480 pixels, 15 frames/sec.
    320 x 240 pixels, 60 frames/sec.
    320 x 240 pixels, 30 frames/sec.
    320 x 240 pixels, 15 frames/sec.

    The only restrictions are:
    - Maximum movie clip size at one time: 1 GB
    - Even if the clip size has not reached 1 GB, recording will stop at the moment the clip length reaches 1 hour.

Sony's H2 and H5 cameras have this capability also.

OT: does MPEG4 videos captured on digicams have better quality than those captured using a mini dv camcorder? especially when transferred to a DVD?
