    Mga Tech Gurus,

I'm kinda confused is the smart bro internet connection using GPRS or EDGE or HSDPA? Whch would me much better vis-a-vis using a 3G phone to connect to the internet? I have this notion that a smart bro connection has a SIM. Tama ba ako?

P.S. I know there is already an existing smart bro thread, pero parang kulang kasi.

Thanks you for inputs. . .

    bro maz:

I am assuming that you are talking about the Smart Bro Wireless that Smart has been advertising for 700 pesos/month.

The smart bro internet connection also uses 3G, which is a little bit faster than GPRS or EDGE but slower than HSDPA. The connection speed is quite the same, wherein using a 3G phone to connect takes around 384 kbps max. Using smart bro is around that bandwidth also.

Smart bro has no sim. The modem uses the WiMax technology which does not use SIM cards.

    Bro,

then would this mean that my Motorola V3x which has HSDPA will be faster than the Smart Bro?

Nasa likod lang kasi nang bahay namin ang tower ng smart (would being near a tower be an advantage?)

Using Smartbro wireless (P799 for 40 hours free and P10 per 30min thereafter) and your 3G cellphone will give you the same access speed, which is around 384kbps. Using your 3G phone, charge is P20 per hour. So, this means that you have to log P799/P20 or 40 hours a month on your cellphone (a little over an hour a day) to equal the charges of the Smartbro wireless......

If your actual usage is less than 40 hours a month, then you may opt to use your 3G phone.... However, if its 40 hours and above, you may use either the 3G phone or the Smartbro wireless, since the charges are basically the same... Of course, you have to pay an initial amount for the modem, P1999....

Get a dedicated 3G data line na lang. PLDT WeRoam or Globe Visibility. They come with either a PCMCIE card for your laptop, or a USB connected modem.

1800/mo for PLDT, 2000/mo for Globe. 1.8Mbps where HSDPA is available, but it can scale down to 384kbps regular 3G, or 43kbps EDGE when the signal gets bad. PLDT I think has the edge in terms of coverage areas.

V3X i think does not have HSDPA bro... technically HSDPAs are 3.5Gs, meaning they are faster than 3Gs. But also, take note that your line of sight and proximity to a cellsite is also a key here.

since you are using it at 1-2 hours/night, it means that you are using it at around 30-60 hours/month. it translates to around 300 to 600 pesos/month if you are doing this regularly. you may also be exceeding the estimated time (pag nalilibang....), which can translate to around 700 pesos monthly.

    my recommendation?

get a separate wired or wireless connection na lang bro. onti na lang difference sa price. wala pang limit yung connection mo. and you can do downloads pa.

    Thanks bro happy!

check mo din bro yung smart bro device na plug in sa USB port. it costs 700/month for 40 hours free/month, for excess of the allocated 40 hours/month, they will charge you 10 pesos per 30 minutes. baka ok na sa iyo yan.

Using my HSDPA phone as a modem, I get around 400Kbps download, 80Kbps upload on Speedtest.net.

both use 3G signal pre. the only difference is consistency. mas consistent ang signal ng nasa labas ng bahay ang antenna compared to the indoor type na kinakabit sa USB port.
