CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga - Officials of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in Region 3 expressed alarm on Monday over the proliferation of an invasive species of turtle that now threaten Central Luzon's local fish population and other aquatic animals.

DENR Region 3 Executive Director Maximo Dichoso said his office has been receiving complaints from fishpond owners and operators about the turtle species preying on local fish species, particularly bangus and tilapia fingerlings.

Citing the complaints, Dichoso identified the problem as the growing population of the invasive Chinese softshell turtle, the scientific name of which is "pelodiscus sinensis."

These softshell turtles have reportedly invaded hundreds of fishponds in Pampanga, Bulacan, and nearby provinces in the region, prompting DENR authorities to create a task force to look into the animal's distribution, feeding habits, and reproductive characteristics.

"The Chinese softshell turtle has been classified as an invasive alien species (IAS) introduced in the country in the 90s," Dichoso said.

The DENR official also warned the public against propagating or raising the animal as a pet.

Today, the reptile is considered a threat to local biodiversity and a pest in the multi-million fish industry of Pampanga, Bulacan and Bataan, said Dichoso.

Just promote soft shell turtle dishes in local chinese restaurants. The problem will have it's own solution and even might have commercial gains too.

These invasive animals (ugali talaga ng China, oo) should be wiped out as they are destroying our food production.

I'm sure may kinalaman mga intsik dito. They want our seas, our islands, even sa minerals, ang daming mainland illegal miners dito sa atin. Di pa nakuntento sa mga illegal aliens na nasa Manila (i.e. divisoria). Pati sa mga public market ngayon, may mga mainlanders na. It's logical to deduce na sila ang ginagawang channel to distribute smuggled goods from CHina.

We need a stronger political will to kick out these unwelcome invaders. Unfortunately, they're really good at corrupting people, lalo na sa poor provinces where people have no access to media and education.

I'm sure China is interested to conquer our country, given our vast natural resources both land and sea. Slave labor lang naman kasi meron sila dun. It will really do the World good if China is broken into little countries para mawala ang clout nila.

What they are doing now to the Philippines, I think, is their meatgrinder strategy. Attack on all fronts (Food, security, politics, economy etc) to tire us out and drive us to the ground until we give up.
