Hoax text message about a supposed LUCKY TEXTER OF THE DAY promo with corresponding DTI Permit number has been reported to be circulating:

"Congratulations! Ur d lucky txter of d day! U won P500+SMARTLoad retailer simpack! To get this, just type:+639195754274 & send it 5x to 8080808233666. DTI #2772"

As cleared and clarified by SMART, it's actually a Pasaload transaction. Notice the first-three digits of the the last set of numbers, 808++. Everything after 808 is no longer read by the system, only the first three. If no denomination is placed after the mobile number, Php10.00 is being transferred by default.

    "Hi SMART Tsikoteers,

Please be informed that official text messages from SMART have a caller line identification of SMART and not any mobile number(s). Please disregard the message you received because SMART doesn't support such promo.

If you continually receive such messages , you may personally file a formal complaint to NTC Head Office or any of its Regional Offices via their One-Stop Public Action Center for proper action. In the event that you have received three consecutive text messages from the same number, we can be ordered by NTC to deactivate the culprit's line. Please make sure that you are able to get the number of the one who sent you a hoax text message. Thank you very much."

On Ninoy the hero and cellphone swindlers
    (Malaya, Dahli Aspillera)

Do Smart and the NTC have no technology nor scruples to locate that Smart-owning swindler with cell #0910-381-3529?’

I address a few comments to Ramon Isberto, public affairs boss of Smart Cellphone Communications, Inc.:

Don’t you have the technology to track down the swindler who owns Smart cellphone #0910-381-3529?

You may have the technology, but not the interest, since all the airtime load-transfers and thousands of texts sent by these swindlers victimizing Juan Pasan Cruz are income for Smart.

To protect Juan Pasang Cruz from these swindlers, has it occurred to you to include in your multi-million peso ads, warnings against these swindlers, your 888 number, whereabouts of the NTC action Center, as stated in your letter to me?

    Mr. Isberto’s letter:

Allow me to clarify some points raised in your column entitled "Smart cell and street food" (Malaya, Page: A5/Date: April 4, 2005).

    1. Smart did not "swindle" the son of your friend. He was the victim of unscrupulous individuals who sent a hoax message designed to deceive him into handing over P10 of airtime load.

Please note that the instructions given him would result in the transfer of his airtime load to the cell phone number "0910-381-3529" which is evidently being used by these fraudsters to collect airtime value from unsuspecting victims.

    2. Such scams have unfortunately proliferated along with the increasing numbers of cell phone users. The modus operandi of these tricksters is simple. They introduce themselves as officials or representatives of a well-known organization or company. The names of the PCSO, Pagcor and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas have been used. Then they tell their intended victims that they have just won a huge prize, usually several hundred thousand pesos. Then, they ask their intended victims to do any of following things:

    * Deposit money to specific bank accounts.

    * Send prepaid card numbers to a specific cell phone number.

    * Pass on airtime load to a certain cell phone number.

Let me emphasize: Smart does not ask winners of promos or contests to pay anything in order to claim their prizes.

    3. We are working closely with the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) in dealing with this problem. As a matter of procedure, subscribers with complaints regarding fraudulent messages are requested to formally lodge their complaints directly with the NTC Action Center.

Should there be sufficient basis, the NTC will instruct the concerned cell phone operator to disconnect the sender’s line from our network.

But the ultimate defense is prudence. We strongly urge cell phone users to be vigilant in order to avoid getting victimized by these scams.

Please do not pass on or forward such fraudulent text messages in case you receive them. If in doubt, please call our 24-hour customer care hotline (dial *888) in order to verify the authenticity of text messages offering prizes.

We hope this sheds more light regarding the issue with text scams. Be assured that we are working diligently with the NTC to help eradicate this problem.

AFAIK, the game show should also send you mail aside from the text message. Rely on the first one, peeps. ;)

one important rule. If you win in any contest, you will get a call and not a text. You will also get a registered mail which is part of the ruling before DTI can approve the promo.
