What is your take on the Nokia 6110 Navigator? It is currently priced between P19500 to P22,500 (depending who you ask). Worth the price?

The gps service is basically free since you use the GPS system the USA placed into orbit. The gps software is said to be Route66, which uses maps stored in the phone's memory card (you can purchase other maps for other areas too). That's different compared to the N95 GPS software in where you have to download (via internet connection) the map of the area each time you use it.

The Nokia 6110 Navigator currently costs around P20K (plus/minus P500 depending on who you ask).

Interestingly, Nokia has a total of three phones with integrated GPS function. The N95, 6110 Navigator and E90. This does not include the GPS accessory which can make any Nokia celfone running S60 a GPS navigation device.

oh thats means, someone can access the gps regardless of whether he is on a prepaid or postpaid mode?

    great.

idea ko kasi sa gps, you will know exactly where you are in the world once you activate it. but here if the map is stored in the memory card, then you can only know where you are in relation to the map stored?

so if you are in baguio and you dont have its map in your phone, then no gps?

    ignorant question ba?

Well, the GPS system will still give you a set of coordinates of where you are but if you don't have a map of the area, the coordinate points will not mean much except you can home-in to that point again in the future.

But yes, without gps linked map of the area, it will be useless for you. Plus side, maps of other countries are widely available so if you travel abroad often, it can come in handy.

The Nokia N95 I got came pre-loaded with street-level maps of the UK and the Northern part of France. You only need an internet connection if you want turn-by-turn navigation. Without the internet connection, what you have is a digital map with a search function and a GPS that will pinpoint your location. It can calculate the route without connecting to the internet, too, but it can only give you route directions in text form.

I wonder what's the difference in the GPS hardware between the current batch of Nokia phones and the N95? I was a bit dismayed when I found out that the N95 uses Smart2Go ... which I didn't bother downloading before (to use on another phone) because of the need for internet connection. AFAIK, there's no other navi software out yet that can interface with the N95's GPS receiver.

It's good news the new ones use Route66. It means a good probability that the other navigation software makers will come out with their version for its Symbian OS.

Bakit ganu'n? ... Route66's homepage doesn't indicate the availability of a Philippine map. Any info from the vendors if the 6110 Navigator comes with a Philippine map?
