Seoul - Parents looking to grab a teenager's attention with a stiff punishment should confiscate their cellphone.

A study by a top South Korean advertising firm shows that a cellphone is one of a Korean teenager's most prized possessions.

Among 13- to 15-year-olds, 77.5 percent said a cellphone was a "must-have" item, while for those aged 16 to 18 the figure was 76.7 percent, the Cheil Communications survey showed.

"Cellphones are the key to a teenager's social network," said Andy Joohyun Lee, senior researcher at Cheil Communications' Brand Marketing Institute.

Teenagers in Internet-savvy South Korea said they would feel helpless without a phone, making it impossible to keep in touch with friends and send them text messages and pictures.

The ad agency surveyed 800 consumers in the Seoul area aged between 13 and 49. Three of every four South Koreans have a cellphone.

meron nga me nabasa na article na it depends sa bata o teens. Kung you will ground them tapos ang buhay nila revolves around TV, PC gaming etc. di parang bakasyon grande sila hehehe. mas gugustuhin pa nilang ma ground Baliktarin mo kaya pag nagkamali kailangan makisalamuha sila using conventional means, ano kaya mangyayari? Ang wierd na din ng panahon ngayon

Iba na mga bata ngayon. When I was a kid, the worst thing my parents could have done to punish me was to ground me and take away my bicycle. Back then, wala pang PCs and game consoles. Games were done outdoors. And in high school you had to cultivate the fine art of conversation, kasi wala pang cellphone back then and if you really liked a girl, you had to come up to her and talk to her. Ngayon, TTNL (text text na lang)
