    aircon:

Pro: works even in hot weather.
    Cons: malakas sa kuryente

    cooler:

Pro: works like an electric fan. medyo matipid sa consumption
Cons: increases humidity, does not work in very hot weather.

    Evaporative Air Cooler:
    pro:
    -less power needed to operate
    -cools a big area effectively
    -costs less to buy

    con:
-requires venting of air from inside to outside (change air) because of the rise in humidity. Since the system depends on water evaporation, if the air is very humid, the system will not work effectively. It would require installation of an exhaust fan or similar.
    -requires periodical water replenishment
-water pad needs to be replaced eventually
-recommended water tank draining if algae is growing inside.
-can only cool 5 degrees from ambient temperature.

    AIRCON:
    pro:
-can cool a room to a desired temperature (if sized correctly)
    -simple maintenance

    con:
    -consumes more power
    -more expensive to buy

Evaporative air coolers are effective when used correctly. In enclosed spaces, you will need either an exhaust fan or another A/C unit to condense the water from the air in the room.

Buhayin ko lang to kasi I am interested in buying one.

Do I have to leave my window open in order for the air cooler to cool my room?

well, not really... but you will need some sort of ventilator fan to exhaust the room's air to the outside. Or you can fix the air cooler to use outside air, cool it and blow it into the room (example, install it in a window).

We have a lot of air coolers at home and in church. They're ok when used in the open or semi-open venue. But inside a room, it's worse than just using a fan.

And even if used outdoors, it is only effective when it's hot and the air has little humidity to start with. Otherwise, the air becomes stuffy and your skin becomes as sticky as a flytrap.

In short, just get an aircon for no-hassles cooling.

Evaporative air coolers are meant to be used with a steady exchange of air from inside to outside. This is to control the humidity of the room.

If you like industrial designs... the units with the IWATA brand does the job but doesn't look pretty.

There is a company by the name of COLLENT (or something near to that) located in QC that sells evap-coolers that looks like dwarf aircon units complete with remote control. I used to have one of their units in my computer rental shop.

That's right. Not all rooms in a typical house may have a through and through air circulation. In which case, air coolers are not the ideal solution. An air conditioner is the only way to go in such situations.

True but aircons do consume a lot more power.

The exchange of inside/outside air can be aided by using an electric fan or ventilator positioned to suck out stale room air out through an open window.

Aircon or Air Cooler (Evaporator)
