Alonso is F1's fastest driver - enquiry Written by Administrator Thursday, 28 December 2006 Dec.28 (GMM) Fernando Alonso is the fastest driver in the current F1 field and the eighth quickest of all time, according to a survey. As reported by the Spanish publication 'As', the British specialist magazine F1 Racing staged an enquiry to find the sport's fastest fifty racers. As well as asking experts including Max Mosley, Jean Todt, Keke Rosberg and Eddie Jordan, the magazine compared drivers' statistics relating to their teammates in F1. It was found that 67 per cent of the time, back to back champion Alonso - the youngest driver on the top-50 list - outpaced his teammate. Ayrton Senna topped the magazine's findings, with Michael Schumacher in second place. Alongside Alonso, only four other current drivers got a mention: Kimi Raikkonen (13th), Jarno Trulli (42nd), Mark Webber (43rd) and Jenson Button (49th). Alonso also placed higher than names including Gilles Villeneuve (11th), Alain Prost (14th) and Niki Lauda (18th), but behind Juan Manuel Fangio (6th) and Mika Hakkinen (7th).

Tosh... if any of you guys had seen Ayrton Senna at the height of his powers... you'd understand why he's number one on the list. No one had instincts like his...

Surprise Fangio isn't higher. The things he could do with a motorcar with no grip were astonishing.

^yeah, i was wondering why Fangio was not at least top 3. as you said, the cars he drove had none of the technology of their descendants, yet he was a virtuoso with those things.

i had heard that he even won a race without brakes! (they had failed early on) come from behind victory pa!

Ayrton Senna truly is fast, he set the most pole positions in the least amount of time. Michael Schumacher set the new record on most pole positions but it took him a long time to achieve it.

Survey lang pala yan, and not based on actual records.

If you will scan all the F1 circuits in the calendar, most fastest lap records were set by Michael Schumacher.

If you will account the engine differences between today and before, then just count who has the most number of Pole Positions.

So it doesn't matter who you think is fastest, but what the records actually show.

The thing is... Schumacher has had the fortune to be in some great F1 teams, and has enjoyed competitive cars. Part of what makes him great, actually, is that he's been able to ensure that he always has the best engineers (he brought his crew with him when he moved to Ferrari).

Other drivers weren't so lucky. Would you say Barrichelo was better than Montoya? Most people wouldn't, but Barrichelo has a marginally better record... doesn't make him a better driver. Of course, people would say the same about Kimi versus Alonso, but then, 2007 will show us whether they're right.

Don't get me wrong... Schumi is a terrific driver, technically, but in terms of records, the playing field isn't level due to the differences in cars, drivers and driving conditions. I would put him in the top three, though.

Herr Schumacher was also able to do a podium finish (2nd place) without brakes.

Agree with you on Fangio, who won five(5) World Championship Titles, a record that was unsurpassed for almost half a century. Most of the times, he was driving against the odds and won. And on his races in Argentina(?), he was the driver and mechanic.....

Schumi would've gotten the poles record a lot earlier if it wasn't for 1-lap qualifying with your race fuel load on-board. After that qualifying became more about strategy and less about ultimate pace... I wish we could go back to the good old days with one hour of an open pitlane.

yeah, Schumi could have got it much earlier if the rules weren't changed year after year.

2002 was the last year of the 12-lap qualifying. MS was already 11 years in F1 and he only accumulated 50 P1, when Ayrton Senna died he was 10 years in F1 and he accumulated 65 P1.

I never said Schumi was faster than Senna, only that he would almost certainly have broken Senna's record earlier if not for the new qualifying format. At the end of 2002 I'm sure you didn't think it would take 4 years for Schumi to get another 16 poles.

ah ok. he got 5 P1 and 8 P1 in 2003 and 2004 respectively. i think the one tire per race in 2005 is the culprit.
