Chavit confirms son nabbed in HK for illegal drugs

MANILA, Philippines – Former Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson confirmed that his son was arrested in Hong Kong last July 11 for possession of illegal drugs.

Singson said his son, Ilocos Sur Congressman Ronald Singson, is still detained in Hong Kong after he was allegedly caught with illegal drugs at the Hong Kong International Airport.

“Sana ma-deport dahil maliit na bagay yung nahuli sa possession niya. Nasulsulan lang siguro yun. Humihingi ako ng paumanhin sa lahat at hindi magandang ehemplo ang nangyaring ito hopefully magsisilbing leksiyon sa lahat,” Singson said.

Singson was former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's deputy national security adviser.

His son won a second term in the May 10 congressional elections.

In an exclusive interview with ABS-CBN News, the elder Singson said his son was going to see popular recording artist Usher in Macau, who recently held a concert in Manila through the help of their company, “Fearless Production”.

The former governor admitted that the main reason why his son decided to go abroad was due to his break-up with his showbiz girlfriend, Lovi Poe, on the night of Usher’s concert in Manila.

Singson could not give exact details of his son’s arrest. Earlier reports said Rep. Singson was apprehended with 26 grams of cocaine and 2 tablets of valium.

The arrest came as a shock to Singson. Although painful, he said he would not use any influence to help his son’s case.

He claimed that he has been strict with his children, his employees and even in his province when it comes to illegal drugs. He also alleged that he regularly sends his children to take drug tests.

Singson also denied that former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, now congresswoman of the 2nd district of Pampanga, will be visiting his son when she goes to Hong Kong.

Rep. Arroyo will leave the Philippines with her husband on Sunday night and skip President Benigno Aquino's first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday. She will return on Wednesday.

Fat chance. Kinda ironic for him to say that, considering how strict the Philippines is with foreigners caught in possession of drugs in the Philippines.

We don't execute them anymore, but that amount of cocaine used to be enough to allow for a death conviction here.

He has been charged with trafficking in dangerous drugs and is currently detained at Lai Chi Kok Correctional Institute.

In Manila, there were speculations that the amount of cocaine allegedly found on Singson—who is also a concert promoter and owns a cable music channel—might not be for trafficking purposes, even if the 26.1 grams were a bit too much for personal consumption.

“People charged with trafficking are those caught bringing in drugs to Hong Kong. But if they’re apprehended while in the streets, that’s possession,” Yumul quoted Abner Sto. Domingo of the Philippine Consulate’s Assistance to Nationals Section, as saying.

Under Hong Kong's drug laws, maximum penalty for manufacturing and trafficking of drugs is life imprisonment (20 years) and a fine of five million Hong Kong dollars.
