THE problem in Philippine basketball is far from over.

Contrary to reports, no compromise has been struck between Pilipinas Basketball and the Basketball Association of the Philippines regarding the top two positions (chairman and president) of Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas.

“There’s no truth to (published) reports that Senator Jinggoy Estrada) has agreed to assume the chairmanship and let Mr. Manny (V. Pangilinan) act as president,” said a very reliable BAP insider. “Senator Estrada has not changed his stand. As BAP president, he wants to be SBP president.”

Unidentified sources were quoted in yesterday’s (Sunday) broadsheets and tabloids that a compromise had been reached wherein the senator reportedly accepted SBP’s chairmanship and gave way for MVP to be president.

“Wala si Senator Jinggoy dito (sa Pilipinas). Basta ang sabi niya bago siya umalis, kailangang siya ang maging presidente ng SBP. Wala siyang sinabi na ta-tanggapin niya ang chairmanship,” the BAP insider stressed.

The insider added that “those pushing for MVP to become SBP president could just be floating the idea to find out if this would be acceptable to the people. But as far as the BAP is concerned, it is standing squarely behind its new president (Senator Estrada) in his desire to become SBP head.”

According to Sunday’s reports, the agreement to make Estrada chair and Pangilinan president would be finalized when the SBP holds its first national congress on November 11.

SBP has a 25-man board, 12 each from PB and BAP, and the last slot occupied by Pangilinan, chair of telecommunications giants Smart and PLDT.

The November 11 congress is actually the third being called by SBP, the first two on September 30 and October 21 having failed to push through.

Estrada was elected BAP president after former Senator Joey Lina resigned after his nomination as SBP president was rebuffed by POC president Jose “Peping” Cojuangco Jr.

hay naku, what's new? di ba nga BAP was holding the country hostage by not following POC's ruling against them? iba nga ang nakaupong leader ng BAP, pareho din naman ang mentality, what's the use? kung makikialam pa ang mga pulitiko dito, malamang di na makakasali ang Pilipinas sa basketball hanggang sa susunod na Asean Games!

enjoy na lang natin ang World Pool Championships at kalimutan na muna yang basketball, tutal kaya ba nating talunin ang China, Japan or Korea? :D

    SBP President or Nothing?

hey, my favorite jingle-unggoy is in the news again!

so, while the power-grab is going on, am i correct in thinking that organized basketball and international competition for the philippines is in disarray?
