US probes Mikey Arroyo over properties

MANILA, Philippines - The US Justice Department is investigating party-list Rep. Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo over his alleged properties in the United States, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima has revealed.

De Lima said the US Department of Justice has sent her a letter about the investigation.

However, she declined to discuss details regarding the issue.

"Mayroon kaming natanggap na request... about an ongoing investigation. But you have to pardon me, hindi pa namin puwedeng sabihin iyung detalye, kasi ongoing pa nga," she said.

De Lima added that Washington and Manila have existing cooperation agreements on cases involving the 2 countries.

Arroyo's lawyer, Atty. Ruy Rondain, said he is not aware of any US investigation on his client.

The lawmaker, a son of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, was earlier reported to have bought and sold a beachfront house in Foster City, California.

A financial expert interviewed by ABS-CBN News North America last year wondered how Arroyo got his mortgage approved when he purchased the Foster City property in 2006.

Triguero is also a member of the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce.

“He makes P455,000 a year. That would not even cover the property taxes on that property. How did they get a loan for $1 million? They would have to commit mortgaged fraud and claim that they had a $300,000 plus income in the United States, when of course he’s functioning as a congressman in the Philippines to qualify,” said James Triguero, a member of the Filipino American Chamber of Commerce.

A company partly-owned by Arroyo later sold the house for $1.125 million to owners of the restaurant chain "Gerry’s Grill," according to Vera Files.

The property was not allegedly listed in the annual statements of assets, liabilities, and net worth that Arroyo is required to disclose under the law.

The former President's son and his wife, Angela, are also facing tax evasion charges filed by the Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Department of Justice.

Katawa talaga yung interview ni Mikey with Mareng Winnie. Nakakatawang-nakakainis. He seems oblivious that he's digging himself into a hole. Parang parati naman sila nakakalusot kaya normal lang lahat kahit it sound scandalous na pinagsasabi nya. Sabihin bang marami daw sila nakuhang kontribusyon sa eleksyon in relation to their sudden wealth.

I can't help it! Goodness! This is such an irritating interview. Mikey Arroyo remained elusive throughout his grilling by Arnold Clavio and most especially Winnie Monsod. Kudos to Winnie for being so brave to throw all those questions and explicitly tell Mikey Arroyo that he IS answerable to the public! Did you see the smirk on Mikey Arroyo's face when he replied, "If you are in doubt you can sue me in court"?

Well Mikey Arroyo never answered anything with a period. He couldn't answer anything straight, in fact. If he does attempt to, the replies turn out to be so flimsy that he makes us all look so stupid.

Mikey justified his millions by saying he and his wife received monetary gifts from their wedding. And then he received donations for his campaign. And so from 5 million, their assets miraculously shot up to 176 million? Is he saying that a wedding and an election campaign are profitable? Let's all get married and run for public positions! Was the Philippines born yesterday?

Mikey Arroyo refuses to disclose the shareholders' names of the house in Foster City, California. It's because he has no one to disclose in the first place. There is no corporation. That house is solely their property. Arroyo property.

This is a serious matter, and the whole nation yearns to know why the president and her family is living a very lavish lifestyle while gas prices continue to surge and living conditions get worse every day. It is a serious matter that Mikey Arroyo easily shrugged off with smirks and chuckles.

No wonder we are in **** right now.
