The Catholic charismatic group El Shaddai has drawn up a short list of candidates whom it will be endorsing in the May polls. The list includes three from newly formed party Ang Kapatiran, two from Team Unity and one from the Genuine Opposition.
El Shaddai leader Bro. Mike Velarde said his group has chosen political neophytes Martin Bautista, Zosimo Paredes and Adrian Sison of the Ang Kapatiran party, also known as the Alliance of the Common Good, because of their good platform of governance.
“Matitino naman sila, at mukhang tapat ang hangarin na magsilbi sa bayan [I think they’re sincere in their vow to serve the nation],” the leader of the charismatic group said.
The El Shaddai, with its five million members, has emerged as a political force in every election period as the group is believed to practice bloc voting.
A source in the El Shaddai said that the three other candidates in the short list are Joker Arroyo and Michael Defensor of Team Unity and Francis Escudero of the Genuine Opposition.
This was indirectly confirmed by Velarde who said that he has spoken with the three senatorial candidates together with another Team Unity bet, Bukidnon Rep. Juan Miguel Zubiri.
“Senator Arroyo already came to me. More or less we can say that he will get our endorsement,” Velarde said. Velarde spoke with Defensor and Zubiri during El Shaddai’s 15th anniversary rites last Feb. 15 at the Yñares Center in Rizal province.
Arroyo and Escudero have consistently made it to the winning circle in recent pre-election surveys while Defensor and Zubiri were trailing near the Magic 12.
The El Shaddai leader noted that a total of 18 candidates will be included in the short list.
Asked whether he is inclined to support other administration bets, Velarde specifically mentioned Team Unity’s Vicente Sotto III and Tessie Aquino Oreta, saying they must clarify why they bolted the opposition and joined the administration.
“They have to explain to us why they did that,” Velarde said, adding that a criteria in the selection of candidates will be their “unwavering commitment” to their beliefs.
The El Shaddai’s endorsement of unknown political party Ang Kapatiran, which was founded by a Christian lay group three years ago, is the second show of support from a formidable religious bloc after the party also secured the blessings of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines.
In its Web site (www.angkapatiran.org), the party listed its main platform commitments which include belief in God, respect for life and human dignity, strengthening of the family, dignity of work and rights of workers, care for nature as God’s creation, peace and active nonviolence, and solidarity.
Of the three candidates of Ang Kapatiran, perhaps only Paredes is well-known, being the former head of the Presidential Commission on the Visiting Forces Agreement. Sison is a lawyer specializing in taxation and family law while Bautista has worked for 17 years in the United States as a gastroenterologist before returning to the country last year.
Come to think of it, though CBCP do not directly endorse candidates, they still considered these guys to be a special group for they eventually endorse these guys as per the quoted write-up.
