GMA to unveil laborers hotel in Manila
05/01/2007
President Arroyo is set to unveil the government’s non-wage benefits to laborers today with the inauguration of the first PGMA Workers Inn dubbed Gwapotel.
Gwapotel offers clean, comfortable and affordable sleeping quarters for Metro Manila laborers whose workplaces are too far away from home, for a very affordable fee.
Mrs. Arroyo, together with Chairman Bayani Fernando of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and other national and local government officials will lead the inauguration of the project at the renovated National Power Corp. building on Bonifacio Drive, in Port Area, Manila.
An individual may avail of an 8-hour overnight stay at the Gwapotel services for only P25. The fee includes an eight-minute use of water in the facility’s shower room.
Fernando said transients need to put in an additional P5 into the coin bank for an extended shower bath.
The four-story Gwapotel houses around 400 sturdy double-deck beds strewn on well-ventilated floors.
A separate stairway has been built leading to the third floor for use solely as lodging place for female transients.
Transients may also take their breakfasts, early lunch and dinner in one of the eateries and fastfood centers, which will soon occupy the ground floor of the building.
The implementation of the Gwapotel “bed and bath” project is in line with the Chief Executive’s thrust to promote the security and well-being of urban workers, merchants, vendors and students and to maximize the use of existing but unoccupied buildings in Metro Manila as lodging places for these transients.
“Gwapotel is one of the non-wage benefits the President will give our workers this Labor Day,” Fernando said.
The Gwapotel project is a component of the broader 10-point agenda of the Arroyo administration to decongest Metro Manila and stem the tide of suburban sprawl and traffic congestion.
MMDA general manager Robert Nacianceno said individuals will have to check in on a daily basis and will be served on a first-come first-served basis. Ben Gines Jr.
