The Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines scored Friday Novaliches Archbishop Antonio Tobias for attending the launching of the Gaming Expo at the World Trade Center in Pasay City Thursday.

CBCP Spokesman Monsignor Pedro Quitorio said it was inappropriate for Tobias to attend such an event. He said the Church is against any form of gambling, legal or illegal. He added that since January 2004, the Church has refused to accept donations from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR), which launched the Gaming Expo. Quitorio said Tobias, along with some nuns who tried out some slot machines during the event, could face sanctions.

Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz earlier said he will investigate reports that several nuns who accompanied Tobias were seen playing blackjack and slot machines at the Gaming Expo. Cruz said the Catholic Church strictly prohibits men of the cloth, including nuns, from gambling. "No clerics, no religious [leader] may engage in any activity unbecoming of their state of life," he said, quoting the Code of Canon Law of 1983.

Cruz said that recently, the Church ordered the dismissal of a parish priest who was caught gambling in a Casino Filipino provincial branch. The bishop refused to identify the priest. He described as "shameful" Church people seen gambling or merely trying out gambling machines. He said CBCP would ask the nuns' superior to explain the incident.

In a separate DZMM interview, PAGCOR spokesman Edward King said the nuns played without money. He denied that the nuns were lured by PAGCOR men to play blackjack and use the slot machines. King also said Tobias was invited to lead the event's invocation. "They played but they had no money," King said, adding that PAGCOR did not tip photographers and TV cameramen to take pictures and footage of the nuns.

I saw this on TV Patrol. Yung mga madre, naglalaro ng slot machines! Parang ang pangit tingnan! But Bishop Tobias, is a known pro-Erap, na isang sugarol. No wonder, present siya sa occasion na yun.

Para sa akin hindi maganda tignan ang nuns na naglalaro ng mga slot machines.

It's called market speculation... so... yeah...

And aren't priests supposed to have a vow to shun material wealth?

    Ang pagbalik ng comeback...

What's the CBCP's official stand on receiving contributions from PAGCOR? It'll be hypocritical for them to condemn gambling and still profit from it by accepting contributions from gambling activities, legal or illegal.

Not all forms of stock investments are for speculation.

Not all orders have vows of poverty.

    Pero OT na...

According to the article in the first post, the church have stopped accepting donations from PAGCOR since 2004.

On the other hand, isn't bingo also a form of gambling? Isn't the church sponsoring such events from time to time for fund raising?
