Philippines Bans Certain Motor Vehicle Imports

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Philippines President Gloria Arroyo has banned imports of most types of used motor vehicles to protect the local automotive industry, the trade department said.

Arroyo's order "strongly supports the growth and development of the local automotive manufacturing industry", Trade Secretary Manuel Roxas said.

A total ban will apply on imports of used cars, sports utility vehicles, passenger vans, pick-ups, and light trucks with a gross vehicle weight of less than 2.5 tonnes, the statement said Tuesday.

Imports of used light trucks weighing between 2.5 and 6.0 tons would be restricted but no ban would be applied because many small businesses, which make up 99.5 percent of all Philippine businesses, cannot afford new vehicles, Roxas said.

"On the average, brand new light trucks cost two and a half times that of imported used trucks," he said.

Local assemblers, mainly subsidiaries or affiliates of Japanese automakers, have complained that imports of used vehicles are ruining their business.

Roxas said there would be no restrictions on imports of used buses weighing more than 12 tonnes, while those weighing between six and 12 tonnes would be regulated.

Auto sales in the Philippines rose 10.9 percent from a year earlier to 77,872 vehicles in the 11 months to November, an industry association said Monday.

i don't think it's great though. (not to offend anybody)

sasabihin nyo na mahinang klase ang mga converted (imported), pero di naman lahat ng imported ay RHD. meron naman galing sa mga LHD countries.

i think that these imported automotives give us more options than what the local industry is willing to give.

another thing is that many people rely on this importation for their livelihood. mga technicians, aircon repairs, upholstery etc, etc... may article nga about this yesterday sa manila bulletin.

sa akin lang, i think this is a good move. true, auctioned vehicles give the consumer affordale choices and a variety of vehicles, but then importing old vehicles is NOT the solution. merong problema: lack of options and expensive vehicles -- this indicates a problem with the automotive industry here.

yun ang kailangan ayusin... slash taxes and encourage an environment that will make the manufacturers/assemblers introduce more models. importing old vehicles is just a stopgap solution -- nothing comes out of it, stagnant and underdeveloped ang industry and money flows out of our country's ears buying vehicles "junk" vehicles from other countries.

the problem should be tackled at the root. our goal should be the maturity of our local auto industry.

Pero mas marami ang maapektohan pag bumagsak ang local car manufacturing.

mga factory laborers, local supplier and contractor, gov't(taxes), etc.

    uy ok yan..!!

pero sana pati ung tax system palitan na rin.

para pumasok na ung iba pang mga modelo ng sasakyan at yun na ang bibilhin ng mga consumers.. at mawawalan na ng demand para sa mga used-imported cars.

    otep,

i'm afraid na kasama dito ang individual imports. la naman kasi nakasulat na mga large importers lang ang madadamay. so i assume na all importation (kasama ang mga balikbayan) of second hand vehicles ay bawal na with regards to the stated law.

they should've put proper regulations on this issue. sana may limit na import like 1 vehicle per person per year this is so that balikbayans and imports for personal use would still be allowed pero yung mass importers na nag-aauction ng mga sasakyan yung pagbawalan.

Pano ba nadedefine kung old car? what if its an old chassis with a new engine?

IMO, a huge percentage of these imported vehicles are luxury vehicles ie SUV's therefore di rin talaga nakakatulong pag import nito. The tag prices of these vehicles are still beyond the means of the average Pinoy family.

my friend can't sell his 4runner in Canada, kasi by law kailangan i-record lahat ng aksidente ng sasakya. eh, he got run into by a van or something, na total wreck, then toyota fixed it like new. the accident record won't alllow him to sell it for what he thinks is a fair price. since may business siya dito at puede naman gamitin dito (rh-drive siya), he's thinking of bringing it here na lang. mura daw freight, pero kinatakutan niya customs...
