If these photos of the next-gen Mercedes-Benz M-Class look familiar, it’s because we ran spy photos of the 2006 model last month (Nov. 15). Due in dealer showrooms next spring after its Detroit auto show premiere, the new ML is 5.9 inches longer, 2.8 inches wider and rides on a 114-inch wheelbase (3.7 inches longer) than the outgoing model. The new model comes in two initial configurations, the ML350, powered by a 3.5-liter, 268-hp, 258-lb-ft V6, and the ML500 (shown), which gets a 5.0-liter, 302-hp, 339-lb-ft V8 under its reskinned hood.
The new M-Class comes with a standard seven-speed automatic transmission, height-adjustable AIRMATIC air suspension and an upgraded permanent four-wheel-drive system. A revised traction control system now incorporates functions such as a downhill driving aid and Hill-Start Assist. Underpinning it all is an all-new unibody platform as well as a redesigned suspension.
Inside, the updated interior is marked by a sport-oriented instrument panel and more room for all five seating positions. The 2006 M-Class includes adaptive two-stage airbags for the driver and front passenger, front sidebags and window-bags, as well as belt tensioners and belt force limiters for all seating positions.
