maintenance: marginally more sa turbo, kasi extra oil and extra parts

power/acceleration: go turbo! 'nuff said. top speed though still remains dependent upon the gearing ng transmission (disregard muna natin air drag, load weight, tire rolling resistance).

gas consumption: marginally more again sa turbo, kasi it needs extra gas to make extra power. but if city driving lang naman, not that much noticeable.

Wala namang additional maintenance items ang turbo. Cooldown lang after highspeed driving ang kailangan. Intercooler also has no moving parts (except for the electric fan).

Added cost na lang siguro kung masira ang turbo (not really something that happens often. One of our turbos here is 1981 vintage already).

In my opinion, the non-turbo diesel engines tend to last longer before blowby. That is considering the same driver, driving style, routes and maintenance. In terms of fuel consumption, the non-turbo has an advantage. In terms of power however, hands down for the turbo and the intercooled ones.

As I have driven and owned an L300VV with a non-turbo 4D56 and a spacegear with a 4D56 Turbo and my brother has a starex with an equivalent engine with intercooler.

L300VV consumes around 8.5 to 9 KM per liter with odometer reading over 180,000KMs and still no sign of blowby.

Spacegear consumes around 6 to 7 KM per liter with odometer only at 120,000KMs and has some signs of blowby.

Starex consumes around 6 to 7 KM per liter with odometer at only 70,000KMs and has very slight signs of blowby.

A friend who operates a Hyundai specialist repair shop mentions that turbo starexes tend to show signs of blowby around 100,000KMs up on the odometer.

Another friend who uses L300VV for shuttle business atests to the fact that L300 with non-turbo 4D56 engines runs over 200,000KMs and still don't need overhaul. Although, they all complain of the sluggish engine of the non-turbo.

My brother has a Pajero with a 4D56 Turbo also had his engine top overhauled at around 100,000KMs on the odometer.

So this is just my personal opinion based on personal and testimonies from friends and relatives. In any case, the 4D56 engine whether it be of korean origin or japan is a pretty reliable engine with proper maintenance. By the way, those L300VV shuttle vans average around 200KMs a day... thats why their 2003 model L300VVs are all running with 200,000+KMs odo.

a bit ot, any tsikoteers had experienced adding intercoolers from just a WaterCooled/OilCooled turbo vehicle? and made a comparison?

I'm on my way doing it very soon, but I would also like to hear from fellow tsikoteers experience too...

I have two diesel cars, both with displacement of 2500cc. The Everest has turbo, the adventure (i think) doesn't. The everest still has the advantage in terms of acceleration, speed and fuel mileage. Gusto ko lang ang adventure dahil mas makitid at madaling ilusot (but that's beside the point).

Anyway, both of my vehicles are under 1,000 kms pa lang.

I sold my 4M40 Pajero because magastos sa Diesel. I get 7km/liter. Now I'm happy with my new Isuzu Xuv because I get 14km/liter. I think having an intercooler turbo can give more power to your vehicle and its fun to drive.
