This is a discussion about Filipino-made Utility Vehicles in the past such as the Bida, Fierra, Anfra etc. A talk about their engines, suspension, and uses etc. Which is the best utility vehicle among them and what makes them considered to be legendary.

CMIIW, but the VW Sakbayan was neither a Philippine-designed nor -manufactured vehicle; it wasn't even exclusive to the Philippines. Known as the Country Buggy from Volkswagen Australia, it was also exported to New Zealand, Singapore and several other small countries in the Pacific.

the sakbayan was re-engineered by filipinos. when parts from the australian version ran out, they had to modify it to use brazilian sourced parts. and it was manufactured here, by DMG. i didn't know that it was exported, though

From the looks of it, the only re-design the Filipinos did was adding a hard top and doors.

The "Sak" was not a UV, but a "people's car" entry to the Philippine Car Manufacturing Program (PCMP) of 1970.
Its real granddaddy was the Kübelwagen, designed by Ferdinand Porsche for the Wehrmacht & the Waffen SS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kubelwagen), and its daddy was the Australian VW Country Buggy.
Baka yung "Trakbayan" pa, pwede pa sana maging AUV, kaya lang DMG ran afoul with Macoy, and when Martial Law was declared, the PCMP fizzled out (only to resurface as a Malaysian program under Mahathir).
BTW, DMG had a cool sports car entry called the "SKB Toro".
Interesting to note that the Sak & the Toro bodies were made of fiberglass.

Actually, the Country Buggy / Sakbayan bodies are made of metal. It's only the roof that's fiberglass. It's a pity that DMG made the Sakbayan a replica of the Country Buggy. They should have made it a bit different to improve the shape (extended wheel arches, beveled corners). Or they should have just copied the VW Type 181 ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_181 ) - in my opinion a more rugged looking vehicle. Or combined design details from both so it will look like the VW based 1978 Brazilian Gurgel X12 ( http://www.gurgel800.com.br/meugurge...l.php?id=x1201 ).

Here's a Mexican truck called Muli that looks like the Trakbayan (from http://www.bugland.be/Verschillende_...es_Exoten.html ). According to this website, the Muli is dated 1973 while the Trakbayan is from 1976-1979.





The Muli / Trakbayan is a strange truck. Front-wheel-drive using an air-cooled VW engine and transmission turned around 180 degrees. How would you operate the gear shift? First gear to the right and down? Whenever I saw a Trakbayan during the 70's, I noticed that the front tires were bald. I guess front-wheel-drive is not suitable for trucks. DMG should have kept the engine at the rear like in the Kombi.

With so many Local utility vehicles made here before, I do not think that MVPMAP's PhUV should be called the "first". FMC's Pinoy and Anfra should get the credit.

The Enzo 911 was a copy of the Porche 911 yata (beats me cause I don't know the Porche vehicles that well). It really looks like a porche but it was powered by either a rear mounted VW beetle engine or a front mounted Saturn.

I really liked this car, but I heard that Porche filed a complaint in court and its production was stopped. Does anyone have an Enzo? I really liked it.

It seems you know Atendido Motors very well. Share mo naman your knowledge re: whereabouts ng founder/status ng company/and yung history nila. I mean among the Local Auv manufacturers before sila ang may pinakamaganda ang nailabas na products after maybe Franscisco Motors' Anfra, MDJuan Jeepstar and Castro Motors

The ENZO 911 is a statement that the Pinoy can! ... this is the brainchild of Dino Juan... owner of Pier One. He made it from a kit from Colin Replicas from England and made some adjustments so as to not duplicate the original dimensions.

Porsche Club of the Philippines filed a suit against Dino to pressure him in mothballing the project and destroy the moulds eventually. It appeared at that time that it was Porsche AG who was behind it... but it turned out to be fellow Pinoys...

Anyway, the moulds are with me, and they are in the safe hands of some friends.... and I am not going to disclose their whereaboouts. Making replicas on limited production volume isn't against the law. Making them on a commercial scale is. If you have a donor VW... we can build one ENZO for you.

By the way, the ENZO is not Pinoy designed... it is actually a replicated replica of the Colin Porsche Replicars from England. But, it is still the closest thing to the real one. With its light weight... it has almost the same power to weight ratio as the real thing.

Oo nga, dami-daminig kit replica cars sa US, hindi naman sila hinahabla. That is sooooo unfair!!! Hindi pala foreigners ang bumabanat sa atin... Mga PILIPINO RIN!

Actually, I would really really like to have one of those. Sana nga I can buy an old sira-sira beetle, then purchase a brand new beetle engine, then put on the enzo body

Did you say Panther Motors? I came accross one just a few months back and I took some pics. Naka-archive. Share ko, for history's sake, one of the few surviving units (I suppose) ~

Do you guys remember another brand which used to advertise being able to do 40km/L of diesel (actually parang 80km/L nga ang tanda ko e)? Parati din siyang nagaadvertise sa diyaryo noon. Yung itsura niya parang Land Rover Defender...
