Anybody know why some cars have the rear muffler on one side of the car? Toyota Corollas always had them on the left side, while Honda Civics on the right side. The old MB's had them on the left side, and I think so did BMW (save for the earlier ones with a center rear muffler like in the old 5er).

Preference, I think. There's simply no space to pack the spare tire and muffler symmetrically, so they had to juggle them around to keep weight left-right close to 50:50.

Ideally, you'd pack it so that more weight is on the passenger side (to offset the driver), but that doesn't explain why some Japanese cars are one way and others... the other.

I don't know. Our old singkit Lancer had the muffler on the right side, same with the gas filler lid. (actually center muffler pero yung tip nasa right side)

I'm guessing it has to do with inhalation and which side of the road the car drives on. On LHD countries (ours, US, most of Europe, etc) the muffler is on the right side karamihan. Mali yung una kong statement about Corollas, our ae92 has it on the right side. I think so did the 1995 XE we had. So maybe when you're driving, the exhaust gasses should be passed on to the far side of the driver not only to balance but to allow the gasses to escape and not harm the passengers? Ewan, just an idea... hehe. Kaya ko tinatanong...

    I think so, too.

    Precaution and then preference.

AFAIK, exhaust is laid on the opposite side of the gas tank/spout for safety purposes.

And/Or there may not be enough clearance between the tank and the muffler.

exhaust pipe (esp. the muffler) gets hot, so gas tank is positioned away from the piping.

What about some cars having the exhaust and gas tank/spout on the same side? Look underneath and you will find that the exhaust is transversely mounted. (i.e. older Civics 1989-1991 and older integra 1990-1993). and so does the 2008 Impreza where suspension parts being low. Yet another reason to have an 'angled' aftermarket exhaust

for illustration purposes, notice the gas tank and the muffler tip on the the side of this civic. But looking at the entire exhaust system, it's transversely mounted.

underside view of a typical exhaust set-up. gas tank on the right-side. (just ignore my whiteline, perrin, TXS, AVS-ES100, TEIN SS, and Prodrive stuff) :evillaugh

Good point Karding and Ssalloon, I didn't see the point earlier but now I do.

Our 2 Toyota Corollas have the fuel filler at the left side, exhaust at the right.
Our w123 has the fuel filler on the right side, exhaust at the left.
Our w124 has the fuel filler on the right side, exhaust at the left.
Our Honda Civic has the fuel filler on the left side, exhaust at the right.
