I keep on seeing references here about different "generations" of pajeros. Can you provide a link or more info on how to differentiate between the different generations and what they look like? I have a general idea of that Pajero models were sold here in the Philippines but I don't know how they are categorized in generations?

also, is this generational classifications used on this site only or is it common to all Pajero sites on the net?

    hope the links worked

classification by Gen maybe unique only to Phil. auto sites

most Aussie and UK sites i've visited don't use Gen classification

although i've read them classify their Paj's by NA and NJ which I've yet to decipher

Gen 2.5 - Bilstein (not sure of spelling) body same dun sa gen III ni RLP.
Gen 3 - Bulldog look - yun yun gen IV ni RLP at 1999 version ni Mazdamazda.

But I also found a more authoritative site to present the classification:
Prototype - 1973 and basically look like a "jeep"
1st Gen 1985 - they call it "Big Daddy"
2nd Gen - V -Type long (Tonka)and Short (Paj Jr)-
3rd Gen - 1999 New Type Pajero Long and Short
    Current Pajero - 3.8L V6 Engine.

Here's the link and I like this site:

thanks guys! at last I can understand how you guys describe the different models.

pahabol.. I've seen some Gen 1 models here with flat roofs instead of the domed roof which is more common. I know that some of the flat roof ones are monteros (6 cylinder gas, right?) but some have pajero badges and are obviously diesel. Where these flat roof models sold here? aside from the body differences, what makes the domes roof model different from the flat roof?

safe to say flat roof models were gray/parallel imports

I've seen some U.S. monteros/raiders flat roofs here they still look like they rolled out of the car lot

engine displacements and type were the main diff:

    from 2300ltr-2600 ltr and
    petrol and diesel models
    basically from what i've read

The Pajero was 1st introduced here in our shores in 1987 it had a 4d56 2.5 diesel engine. A revised model came out in 1991 with the introduction of the turbo version of the 4d56 to give it more power.
In 1995 the gen 2 pajero was introduced with a new body and adding an intercooler to the engine.
In 1998 a updated pajero came out as what we call the gen 2.5. This time around this pajero had a 4m40 2.8Lt turbo intercooler engine and had an automatic tranmission as an option. Year 2000 came with the introduction of the 4x2 pajero which is still available up to now for 1.8 m
2003 was the year when the newest pajero was introduced here in our shores with the availability of a gasoline engine 3.8Lt and a DDI (direct Injection diesel engine) 3.2Lt now sold for 2.350 gas and 2.450 diesel

Other engine and body variants not available here are the following in Body configuration 3 door or 5 door; bubble top, flat roof, canvass top or semi bubble, Engine 2.6 gas, 3.0 v-6 gas, 3.5 v-6 gas, Other options are abs, air bags, sun roof, moon roof, cruise control, lsd, and numerous tail lamp configuration. Even seating 5 seater, 7 seater or 9 seater hope this helps

anytime sir to add the local gen 1 had all power features except power side view mirrors and power antenae, it had only a single aircon system, and a rear side facing bench seating. Additional options provided by our local mitsu dealer was the western type side view mirror and a front bullbar.
For the gen 2 this model was almost complete, all power features with the power side mirror and antenae. Safety features were a bit lacking and rear seat are front facing. In the aircon this was fitted with a dual type made by nippondenso. And the introcuction of the 4x4 system super select 4 .
Fort he gen 2.5 everything is still the same except for and improved headlight (clear design) and off course the boxy fenders. But the rear seats were changed to side facing bench seating. ( because of the tax laws). In the safety department a driver side airbag was introduced and and improved suspension sytem was placed. (Your now able to switch how boucy the ride is from smooth, medium or hard) And last is the leather seats as standard.

Gen 2.5 available till now has a tv vcd radio on the center console, rally art mags, pajero sticker on the side, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Plus front fog lights (I guess they have lots and lots of stock to dispose)

Gen 3 is the most modern pajero . In terms of safety and confort. All power including a folding side view mirror, abs and dual air bags. Rear seats are back to front facing but the improvement is its easily detachable

different generations of Pajeros?
