Glow Plug - Adventure GLS 98

Mga sirs,

I just bought a 2nd hand Mitsubishi Adventure GLS 1998 2.5 Diesel. Medyo nangangapa pa ko kasi sedan owner (gas engine) ako dati pa. This will be my first time to own a diesel engine AUV. So I hope you guys can answer this particular query. Pagkakaalam ko I have to turn on the Glow/heater plug switch sa umaga for 1 minute tapos pwede ko na start. This will heat up the engine bago magstart. Pero parang ang tagal nya magstart sa umaga. Napansin ko rin na may bulb sya sa switch ng glow plug pero d naman umiilaw kahit i-switch ko. How do I check if my heater plug is not working? and ano po ba ang process ng pag start? kasi ang ginagawa ko:

1. Switch on the glow plug for 1 minute
2. Release the switch
3. Start the engine

Baka mali lang ung ginagawa ko kaya hard starting sya...

1 minute? That's too long, and you run the risk of draining your battery if you do it too often.

I also drive a diesel Adventure, and what I do when starting the car in the morning is to just wait until the glow plug light turns off, then start na agad; it doesn't take more than 5 seconds from when I insert the key. That's usually enough time to heat up the engine prior to starting. Unless of course, it takes a full minute for your glow plug light to turn off.

Since you bought the car secondhand, have you had it checked yet?

thank you for your response. nope, d ko na napatingnan eh. pero ung glow plug light di umiilaw. bka sira ung glow plug ko or may sira ung connection sa light kaya lng hard starting sya so baka nga sira glow plug ko. any implications pag inistart ko ung engine without the glow plug? and assuming na gumagana ung glow plug ko..once nawala ung light...irelease ko muna bago ko istart?or nakaswitch pa rin sya tapos start ko then hintay ko magstart bago ko irelease? thank you again sir for your time responding to my questions.

Glow plugs aid in starting a diesel engine, during instances when the cylinder block becomes too cold for compression to ignite the air-fuel mixture.

In a diesel-engine car, the driver turns the key to the "on" position; the glow plug relay switches the glow plugs on, and a light on the instrument cluster illuminates. This process is called "pre-heating" or "glowing". The light may not come on if the car has been running very recently, or if the ambient temperature is hot. In that case, you may proceed to turn the key to the "start" position and start the engine without having to wait.

Older diesel engines such as the 4D56 (which the Adventure uses) make it possible to crank the engine while the indicator is still on, but doing so also runs the risk of damaging the glow plugs, since the heat of combustion plus the heat of being electrified can easily burn them out.

Glow plugs do have a limited lifespan, which can manifest itself in hard starts, like what you're experiencing. The good thing is, they're easy and inexpensive to replace.

Bogeyman is right though in crosswind’s case, no glowplugs indicator or whatsoever AFAIK we have no glowplugs so no pre-heating requirement - just straight cranking kaya medyo matipid sa batt

Anyway do check your battery condition as well. free naman magpa test nito. Considering your battery is still good most likely palit glowplugs na nga yan.

True, since direct-injection diesels (such as those used by Isuzu) are more thermally efficient, so they don't need glow plugs even for cold starts in hot climates. Some modern diesel engines still come fitted with glow plugs, but they're rarely used for more than a few seconds.

Even large diesel engines used in heavy construction equipment and locomotives don't need glow plugs, since their cylinders are large enough to retain heat and allow easy ignition.

*kung may tester ka i-check mo yung 4 glow plugs
malamang may pundi na
o pa check mo lang glow plug sa electrician dyan sa inyo
check lang para libre,sabihin mo babalik ka pag nakabili na


any implications pag inistart ko ung engine without the glow plug?

*mahirap mag start,madali ma drain battery


and assuming na gumagana ung glow plug ko..once nawala ung light...irelease ko muna bago ko istart?or nakaswitch pa rin sya tapos start ko then hintay ko magstart bago ko irelease? thank you again sir for your time responding to my questions.

*same sa gas engine,basta pag nag start release mo na para di masira starter


kung bibili ka ng glow plug na di oem-mas ok yung japan surplus sa generic o cheap glow plugs, 3x longer compare sa mumurahing glow plugs na di tumatagal

Thank you guys for all the help. papacheck ko na lang muna ung glow plugs ko. kaso mga sir baka ung glow plug indicator na sinasabi nyo si ung nasa gauge panel kung nasaan ung batt,oil etc indicator (sa baba ng speedometer/RPM).Actually nagwowork un sa akin. And yes mga seconds lang sya baka mawala ulit. pero hardstarting pa rin sa umaga. Kasi nung nabili ko sabi ng previous owner meron pang isang switch na pang activate ng heater. please see attached picture below. Nasa tabi sya ng side mirror control sa driver side. Sabi kasi nya every morning I have to switch this on for about a minute then release it then start the engine. Pero napansin ko may bulb sya pero di naman umiilaw. i thought this is a manual activation of the glow plug. pero I might be wrong. so I need your expertise mga sirs baka meron kayong ganito sa mga ride nyo. perhaps u can help me understand the use of this switch bago ko itanong sa electrician. thanks again mga sirs.

modified na wiring ng glow plug, bale wala na sa susian at naka bypass kaya di na umiilaw yung light indicator,ginamitan ng switch to activate glow plugs,dapat 5 to 8 sec lang pwede na start kung ok lahat ang plugs.....
pa check mo sa electrician...matagal yung 1 min

D.S. yung 1 minute na babad sa glow plug, masyadong mahaba, usually seconds lang, the most 10sec.
Check mo rin yung glow plug relay, baka ok pa glow plug mo, yung relay naman ang sira. Yung manual switch naman para sa glow plug, sabi mo eh hindi na gumagana yung bulbs sa switch, baka naman busted switch na dahil nakababad ng 1minute pag nagpapastart ka. High current kasi ang tumatakbo sa glow plug, by the looks of the switch parang hindi pang high current. Na try mo na idirect switch yung glow plug sa positive pole ng battery? Use a large diameter wire, connect the + pole of the battery to the glow plug sa engine, connect mo lang mga 5 to 10sec, then remove the wire/connection, then start. Pag umandar, ok pa glow plugs mo, baka yung relay o yung switch yung sira. Hope this would be of help

Well I also have a 1998 Mitsubishi Adventure, GL nga lang... I totally agree with them, 1 whole minute is definitely a no-no for the glow plugs. And I don't think may magandang idudulot yang glow plug switch na yan. Its better if you have it returned to the old acc/start switch. Ala sa ayus yung dating owner nyan! hehehe... Di naman jeepney yan para lagyan nya ng ganyang klaseng remedyo. Maybe he used to own owner type jeeps, jeepneys or locally assembled AUVs before he owned your Adventure.

I think pag on yung light ng glow plugs sa instrument panel, that means the glow plugs are also on, if the light's off the glow plugs are off as well (correct me if I'm wrong). So in a normal working situation, your Adventure can be started na pag off na yung light sa glow plug indicator and it should start. Sa kin dati pag ayaw mag one-click start, (maybe one of the glow plugs are dead) ilalagay ko sa "acc" yung susi then back to "on" position then repeat it again tapos it will start na. Nung hindi na gumagana yung method na yun (probably two or all of the glow plugs are dead) binobomba ko na ng paulit-ulit yung gas pedal while cranking with the starter, after a few seconds start na sya. Pero I don't recommend that because your cylinders will be drowned to death and your battery will be discharged kung ibababad mo ang starter. Pero I did that several times and fortunately the engine starts.
