what's the better vehicle to buy? brand new mitsubishi mirage or 5 year old pajero fieldmaster 2nd hand?

gusto ko na kasi palitan ang old 90's model lancer ko, medyo marami na kasing problema. using my savings i could afford to buy a brand new low end variant manual transmission mitsubishi mirage glx or a 5 year old 2nd hand pajero 4x2 automatic suv.

what i like about the mirage is syempre brand new sya, naka visit na ako sa dealership at pwera sa test drive, kinalikot ko talaga ang unit. ang di ko lang nagustuhan is medyo inconsistent sya when it comes to quality, for example, ang ganda ng opening and closing ng doors nya, there is a sense of weight on opening and closing the doors tapos medyo soft "thud" sound lang nya pag isinara, unlike other more expensive brands na parang may "clunk" sound pag isinara ang pinto. pero i dont like the fit and finish sa rear manual window levers nya. i don't know kung sa specific showroom unit lang ba yun pero medyo di talaga sya fully flushed sa interior door panels. tapos sa trunk may nakikita pa akong mga welds near the spare tire. but all in all, for its price, sulit parin sya for a brand new car.

pros for mirage: brand new, manual trans, cheap, i could afford it kahit di ko benta ang current car ko.
cons: small car, inconsistent build quality, gasoline fed

ang gusto ko naman sa 2nd hand pajero is una, dream car ko talaga ito, although di ko talaga sya ma afford at brand new. but im concerned that baka magkakaproblema din ako sa maintenance kasi 5 years old na ang unit. gusto ko rin sya dahil mas safe sya sa family ko because of its size.

pros for the pajero: diesel fed, full size suv that can fit my family comfortably and safely, the ride height, mas marami syang features like all power windows and leather seats plus may monitor pa sa ceiling, but i dont know na dapat ba sya sa pros kasi the more toys, the more maintenance needed.
cons: its 5 years old and i dont know the driving habits of the previous owner, mas mahal sya konti sa price compared to the brand new mirage, at di ko talaga gusto automatic trans. i can afford it pero need ko benta ang current car ko to make up for the difference.

btw city driving lang gamit ko sa vehicle. and i am not from manila and wala masyadong traffic congestion dito sa amin.

so there, can you guys please help me out. thanks

Except maybe the case with the buyers of the current-gen Accent, or the Rio with the same engine.

Five years is relatively new (by my standards) and reliable naman ang Pajero.
We have a six year old Adventure and wala naman major problems na lumalabas. Regular PMS lang.

May mga minor problems like little rattles sa dashboard, wheel needs alignment, scratches, etc. But no problems that will render the car immobile.

Pro for the mirage is the very good FC, and low maintenance. Expected naman yun, bigger car = higher maintenance cost.

ako rin. fresh pa ang 5 years KUNG inaalagaan ng may-ari or driver. kung kakilala mo ang nagbebenta, go.. pero kung hahanap ka lang kung saan saan, brand new mirage na lang

Magkaiba ang Pajero at Mirage. Kotse ang Mirage at Pajero is SUV.

Oh hindi ibig sabihin na more toys is more maintenance. Nasa pag-iingat yan ng may-ari.

Good luck sa iyong pipiliin :D

With a family? Sa Pajero ako. Siksikan na kayo dyan sa Mirage.

A 5-year old Pajero (maintained) should withstand punishments better and longer than a new Migare.

*manilablock, i am assuming the rav4 you bought is priced cheaper than the bnew jazz right? kasi kung mas mura lang ang presyo ng pajero or atleast the same price ng bnew mirage, tiyak pajero na kukunin ko kasi in case may problems, i still have my current car to sell and use the money to fund for its repairs. kaso mas mahal sya and i dont want to end up spending more just in case may mga major problems ang unit. thanks

*ac, ilang beses ba dapat magpalit ng glow plugs? and how much do they cost? thanks

*silvertec, glowplugs OEM/genuine will cost you around P2,000 +/- each (4pcs yan sa paj)
glowplugs japan replacement (like what most of us in the FM thread use) will cost you siguro P400-600

assuming walang problema ang glowplug relay/timing system ng pajero... tatagal ang glowplugs (japan replacement) for years din.

Wifey who used to drive a D-max needs a back-up car just a month ago so I asked her to select between a Mirage GLS and a 2006 Grand Vitara (32K+ on odo). Although she really like the Mirage, hindi sya nagdalawang isip sa GV. Ang rason baka raw pipinahan sya ng Saulog bus.

The 6 year old Suzuki still drive like new and the interior is really neat. Siguro yung 5-year old na Pajero meron pang natitirang 50% sa gulong nya.

Let's say after another 3 more years na tumatakbo ang 5-year old na Pajero at bagong silang na Mirage sa klase ng kalsada natin, baka mas marami nang papalitan sa pang ilalim si Mirage. And by that time siguro, mas mataas pa rin ang value ni Pajero. At syempre, baka mas marami ka ring naisakay na chicks, hehe. jokes!

A Mirage will cost you less to own and run over five years than a Pajero Fieldmaster with the 2.8 liter diesel. Much, MUCH less. Replacement parts needed for a five year old Fieldmaster cost twice as much as they do for a regular sedan, and then there's the adjustable suspension and possible interior wear.

As for safety, said it before, will say it again. A small car that gets five stars on the NCAP crash test is a hell of a lot safer than an older truck that simply fails it.

Of course... there's no way in hell you're getting a five year old Pajero at the same money as a base-model Mirage. If you're getting one at 500k pesos, then that's not a true five-year old, but a Subic or Port Irene import registered as a five year old... likely a ten year old car with over 100k kilometers on it. Five year old Pajero Fieldmasters are still around 900k to 1m.

    pajero... dahil biased ako haha

    kidding aside...

pwede rin ang game plan mo is to get a second hand car (na pasok sa savings) and use whats left of your savings to repair what needs to be repaired sa lancer mo... (or hindi nyo kelangan ng second car?)

objectively speaking, i'd still go with the pajero since you are a family man already... kung binata walang problema... an suv eventhough its old (may it be pajero, fortuner,MPVs innova, adventure etc) will be more practical for you than the mirage...

safetywise, i can argue that the pajero is also a safe vehicle based on the testaments of the people i meet here in tsikot and in other forums... maintenance wise, yup there are parts which will cost you an arm and a leg (lahat naman ata ng kotse, may it be brand new or otherwise) but relatively, maintaining it is rather modest

    thanks all for the replies.

right now conflicted talaga ako kasi gusto ko talaga ng pajero pero hesitant talaga ako bumili ng 2nd hand. medyo mura rin kasi benta ng mayari so medyo may additional kaba kasi baka may hidden troubles na di kaagad makikita, but i've checked it and it is a local unit.

kakalito do i follow the practical route and choose the mirage? or sundin ko yung lust for my dream car?

the only thing that can solve my problem right now is kung mabenta na sa iba yung pajero, but i also dont want to think about the "what ifs", mura narin kasi benta ng mayari so nakakapanghinayang kung di ko grab yung opportunity.

parang naging situation ngayon is ano yung susundin ko, yung utak ko which is telling me mirage, or yung desire ng puso ko which is the pajero

btw im planning on keeping whatever vehicle i end up with for keeps. thanks

640k? Pajero na 5 years old, local pa? I'm doubtful. But kung walang problems yan, say palit gulong lang, steal na yan.
